HOW IN THE NAME OF LITURGY AND ALL THAT IS CELEBRATED, COULD LINCOLN, NEBRASKA BUILD A CATHEDRAL LIKE THIS?

We all know how conservative Lincoln is and that is across the board, in religions, politics and ideologies.

The Diocese of Lincoln is particularly orthodox. So how, how, how this this happen??????

Cathedral of the Risen Christ Lincoln, NE:

The Benedictine altar arrangement does help but not much. Apart from gutting this “piece of art” what could be done to make it more attractive/traditional. The side wall looks like something out of Fred Flintstone’s church!

The building is from 1963, which means it is perfectly in keeping with the style of modern church architecture of the period. The 50s and early 60s did seem to have a strain of chunky weird "Flintstone" design at times, which you can still see in some of the unwanted furniture you sometimes encounter in thrift and antique stores (as opposed to the more streamlined looking "mid-century" stuff that has had a resurgence in popularity).

Groundbreaking was in 1963 under Bishop Casey. This Church looks a lot like many Churches constructed during this period. I know nothing about Bishop Casey's predilections. I doubt Bishop Bruskewitz would have built a Church that looks like this.

Late 50s/early 60s modern "art". It happened.

A perfect setting for an early 1960s school talent show, basketball game, and band concert, followed by duck-and-cover drill.

Nebraska has lots of tornadoes. That COULD solve the problem, under the right circumstances.

I believe if you look closely the "flintstone" panels are covering up full size stained glass windows. for the love of Pete remove them
Who ever thought that they were a good look must have been into the wine

Father, time for your tropical weather update. NOAA shows the GFS ensemble model having the tropical storm hooking back somewhere in the armpit of FL, barely back into the Atlantic, and making a run up the entire eastern seaboard including GA/SC coasts, should be close to crossing FL Tues/Weds or so. You know how inaccurate models are that far out, but something to keep an eye on as for avoiding gridlock.

after closer look someone decided to cover all but the central figure of each window.
STUPID
Maybe afraid of the light

The F.S.S.P. have their priestly ordinations at this ODD looking cathedral on a regular basis hence the Benedictine altar arrangement, but yes it must be wreckovated in a good way!!

I think the wall panels are not covering full-sized windows. The panels are irregularly placed along the walls with a kind of clerestory line running around the building just below the roof level.

It might be that the rough walls are a kind of a "journey" image, and that the stained glass panels are "stops" along the journey with various biblical images.

From a 2013 item in their diocesan newspaper: "LINCOLN (SNR) - When the Cathedral of the Risen Christ was built in Lincoln between 1964-65, it was a modern work of art in every way, including the numerous stained glass windows designed by Max Ingrand of Paris, France, and Rambusch Studios of New York.

Like its name, the Cathedral was designed to reflect on the Lord’s Resurrection. From the statues to the soaring ceilings to the windows, the message rings loud and clear: "He is risen!"

Now there is a concerted effort to preserve and protect the Cathedral windows, including the ones at the main entrance that soar some 30 feet above the ground.

In the nearly 50 years since the Cathedral was built, some of the panels have begun to shift due to fluctuating heat and cold that has caused joints to loosen.

"If you stand next to one of the widows in the nave of the church and look up, you can see that it just sort of waves all the way up," said Msgr. Robert Tucker, rector. "If something isn’t done soon, those windows could break."

Furthermore, the protective layer of Plexiglass that was installed outside each window a couple of decades ago has yellowed and darkened to the point of obscuring the beauty of the glass artwork. This is more evident on the panels that have received the most direct sunlight.

Msgr. Tucker emphasized that repairing the windows is a mark of good stewardship and a necessary step in preserving an important part of the diocese’s history. What’s more, stained glass windows are an important part of worship.

"They tell the story of faith," Msgr. Tucker said."

HUGE news on Rorate blog site the end of Summorum Pontificum is near very near Cardinal Parolin stated as I read it form Rorate, to a group of Cardinals that "we must put an END to this Mass forever" please read the entire article,so much hate these modernists have for The True Mass of All Times.

O my, Tropical Storm Elsa. Will she become a hurricane?

They are great at spreading rumors as news. They are the only ones reporting this.

Father Zuhlsdorf is also reporting it on his blog site!!!! Man your battle stations in order to save the TLM.

NOAA/NHC only reports what models show, and there are a LOT of them, which NHC then essentially stears a middle path while making it clear there is always a lot of uncertainty. You can read what they say yourself, or you can listen to news organizations who always transform NHC forecasts into fact...
www.nhc.gov

As for various models, www.cyclocane.com shows them all and what NOAA/NHC has in order to make their educated guesses/predictions.

As for hurricane, if it covers as much distance daily as early forecasts show, it might be moving too fast to strengthen.

Here is the GFS ensemble model mentioned, but again, this is a loong way out and the further out, the more known inaccurate, and will change as observed weather data input daily and model updated

https://www.ready.noaa.gov/ready2-bin/animation.pl?id=GFS&mdl=grads/gfs/panel2&file=anim

This all simply something on which to keep an eye so that not caught off guard.

The Rorate Caeli Hurricane Center has a pretty good record for accuracy and they are NOT the only ones reporting this.

Fasten your seat belts. The world is about to groan and find itself Modernist.

If the reports are true, it would be a slap in the face of Pope Benedict and truly faithful Catholics

a) I saw no mention on his blog confirming that story,

b) man what battle stations, since once Rome speaks, the deal is done and no preserving anything until Rome says so.

Your options are to get the minority of bishops who care about the minority of Catholics who care to make a fuss which likely will be ignored, or, to flee to renegade sects with each claiming to be the "true" Church and risk schism as surely as the Germans.

Had posted storm info to Father not really intending it to post publically and go off topic, and return now to regular programming on the 1963 Cathedral which sadly aped so much secular civic and business architecture of that time, where it could be a major bus terminal of that age and ditto a civic center or IBM building. The blurb quoted by Father K was as facetious as a gourmand publication waxing lyrical as to the sublimity of a McDonald's cheeseburger expressing highest ideals of fine dining.

Think outside the box. We're not as locked in to the St. Gallen destruction plan as you think. God always has more options than we do. This is a Mass that WILL NOT be silenced, it will not go away and if they try to muscle it out, it will backfire in ways this pope can't begin to imagine. He's pandered to Caesar of all of his pontificate. He will reap what he has sown.

The traditional Latin Mass is never going away. IT IS NEVER GOING AWAY. They cannot codify and enforce the 1970's on the world in perpetuity. Let them try.

All is not lost.

Chip said...

I am thinking outside the box, particularly that giant Nebraska box somehow described as having soaring ceilings. It is a BOX, for cryin' out loud.

Chip said...

As for what God wants, I know two things. God does not care what language in which a Mass is offered, nor the precise rite, so long as hearts are truly ordered to God in total love at Mass and all other times. And frankly, both rites today are conspicuously lacking in that latter among adherents. Most on either side simply act as if THEIR rite somehow makes them holier.

Oh, give the diocese a break. It is the most conservative overall in the US, or at least one of the most. And keep in mind, Nebraska is not a wealthy state, Warren Buffett notwithstanding. No diocese is perfect. Would you rather have a traditional liturgy conducted in a modern-looking building, or an "anything goes" one in a traditional sanctuary? Bishop Conley out there is conservative by most any standard, though I think more amiable and personable than his often seemingly dour and humorless predecessor.

St Paul Outside the Walls in Rome is also a flat ceilinged "box."

Anonymous at 8:50 AM,

St. Paul’s Outside the Walls has an exquisite coffered ceiling, hardly a “flat ceiling box.”

Paris Pete, AKA TJM, fine, then spray a little gold fleck paint on the ceiling and stop belly-aching.

There are MANY flat ceilinged, box-like churches. The complaint "It's a BOX" is nothing more than emotional ranting.

Knowing that your latest is now to come, we await...

I agree this church has all the charm of an airplane hangar and also have long marveled that this modernist box houses the cathedra for the Diocese of Lincoln.

That said, as someone who lived 10 years in Lincoln and 35+ in Eastern Nebraska, I respectfully note that Lincoln is not nearly as conservative "in religions, politics and ideologies" as you think. The university has always had a strong lefty component since at least the 60s and mass migration of people fleeing blue states has purpled up nearby Omaha and may do the same to Lincoln in the near future.

As inadequate as many of us find this cathedral building, I think we can all say that we've certainly seen worse--a LOT worse. The Catholic Cathedral of Liverpool England comes to mind. Or the "new" shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City or...fill in the blanks.
