Pope undergoes scheduled colon surgery
By Vatican News staff writer
On Sunday afternoon, 4 July, Pope Francis was taken to A. Gemelli Policlinic in Rome where he will undergo scheduled surgery. The Pope recited the Angelus as usual with the faithful gathered in St Peter's Square. He left Casa Santa Marta in the afternoon.
The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, confirmed the information through a statement to accredited journalists sent through Telegram: "This afternoon, His Holiness Pope Francis was taken to A. Gemelli Policlinic in Rome where he will undergo a scheduled surgery for a symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon."
Performing the surgery is Prof. Sergio Alfieri. Dr. Alfieri is in the hospital's Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences and heads the Digestive Surgery Complex Operational Unit. He is specialized in general, digestive, colon-rectal, stomach and pancreatic surgery.
Another "medical bulletin will be issued at the end of the surgery", the press office's message concluded

Diverticular stenosis is diverticular scarring which narrows the intestine, symptoms similar to cancer. Am sure they already ran a scope in there and took a sample, but once the effected area is removed and intestine resected, more thorough biopsy of the effected tissue will be done to eliminate cancer as a possibility.
This is not a minor procedure for an 84yr old male, nor for anybody.
If he dies the next pope will be 10 times worse than he is. He appointed the majority of cardinals and 100% of them Catholic hating liberals like himself. So I guess it doesn’t matter too much if he lives or dies. We are doomed either way.
Although I am not a Pope Francis fan, I do wish him the best
Gee thanks Anonymous. You've not only given us a gloom & doom scenario, but reinforced the whole "You Hate Francis" whine line for the Mark Thomases of the world.
Anon220....."we" have lived through numerous bad popes and corrupt leaders in general. If you believe the Church is doomed or even can be doomed, then you deny a basic article of faith and are no manner of Catholic at all.
Anon220....likewise someone living or dying not mattering to you at all. Do you imagine that is even a remotely Christian sentiment? And you think YOU are on the side of the angels?
"Oh ye of little faith!" Trying to predict future papal elections is like trying to predict the stock market or the weather...recall in 1978, John Paul the 2nd was elected, even though Paul the 6th had been pope for 15 years and was more associated with the moderate to even liberal wing of the Church. Or even predicting how the Supreme Court will rule on an issue. Like who would have expected a Republican-majority Supreme Court to uphold Obamacare a few weeks ago?
It’s scandalous that a supposedly priest in good standing allows the publication on his blog of comments so acrimonious and disrespectful to the Pope who is ill and undertaking serious surgery - highly inappropriate and grossly offensive!
No Anonymous...100% of them are NOT like him in outlook. Some of the new ones from Africa are shockingly un-like him. In contrast to Benedict’s appointees...who GAVE YOU Francis. You can’t predict papal conclaves based on the cardinalatial appointments if the reigning pontiff.
Gaudete in Domino Semper!
UK priest, don’t even try to control an American’s freedom of speech from the UK on Independence Day!
All "Anonymous" posts go unread and are therefore irrelevant.
UK Priest,
Fix your Muslim problem before coming over here to complain about freedom
UK-Priest....I find it scandalous anyone claiming to be a priest would butt into another priest's blog to slanderously infer the other priest possibly not in good standing with that "supposedly" cheap shot. We can always tell holy men by their cheap shots, correct? Your parishoners must be so very proud of you.
Whoops...sorry for the typo. Obviously I meant to type, “...OF the reigning pontiff”.
Gaudete in Domino Semper!
