This pulpit location has its origins, I believe, with the Anabaptists. It found its way to the Americas, and is seen in church buildings that have survived the 1700s and early 1800s. This particular parish must be a more evangelical to place such emphasis on the word/preaching.

The altar appears more Catholic than most parishes but the location of the pulpit is strange
