PHOTOS OF GEORGE CARDINAL PELL’ REQUIEM AT ST. PETER’S…

YOU CAN READ VATICAN NEWS' STORY ON CARDINAL PELL'S VATICAN FUNERAL WITH A SYNOPSIS OF CARDINAL RE'S HOMILY HERE.

Here's the money byte of Cardinal Re's funeral as reported by Vatican News:

A man of God

Finally, Cardinal Re emphasized that the late Cardinal Pell was a "man of God and man of the Church characterized by a deep faith and great steadfastness of doctrine, which he always defended without hesitation and with courage, concerned only with being faithful to Christ.”

Pope Francis has given the final blessing and commendation at Cardinal George Pell's funeral in the Cathedral St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican.

I’d rather see another funeral at the Vatican

If I could be pope for a day, job one would be setting someone to work restoring the Altar of the Chair back to Berninni's intention and what worked well for hundreds of years. One less table blocking the aisle.

Does anyone know if it is a Vatican custom, or an Italian one to place the coffin/casket (can't tell which this is) on the floor?

What to say about the funeral. I smirked reading TJM's comment then, quickly regained my composure feeling like I was doing something wrong. I get it but desire via retirement, or, a change of heart that I have little confidence will ever come. That aside, the Church executed the corporal work of mercy

Perhaps the one in that building who most needs to hear this will reflect upon it.

The homily noted that Cardinal Pell was a "man of God and man of the Church characterized by a deep faith..."

That is why I question the claim that Cardinal Pell had hidden himself as "Demos."

"Demos" had launched a vile, disgraceful, attack against the Vicar of Christ. Conversely, Cardinal Pell had praised Pope Francis publicly.

Example: Cardinal Pell's response to the claim that Pope Francis is a modernist:

"To put it politely, I think that’s absolute rubbish! Francis said he’s a loyal son of the Church, and his record shows that."

"He’s very, very concerned for the day-to-day life of the people, and for those who are suffering, those not well-off and those in difficult situations."

"He’s a completely faithful exponent of Christ’s teaching and the Church’s tradition."

The above is opposite the horrific attack that "Demos" had launched against Pope Francis.

If he were Demos — and I am compelled to question that — then Cardinal Pell's integrity has taken a monumental hit. Cardinal Pell, if he authored the hateful Demos attack against Pope Francis, had acted in two-faced fashion.

That is why I have found it difficult to believe that Cardinal Pell, a "man of God and man of the Church characterized by a deep faith...," had, as "Demos," attacked Pope.

Mark, it is what it is and yes Cardinal Pell is Demos. He was speaking the truth about the catastrophe that is epochal hitting the true Church. I think it is a gift from the God of surprises who is letting us all know that there is widespread concern with Pope Francis incoherent papacy and are working to overcome it in the next papacy. Deo gratias!

Mark, this is from today’s Crux:

The days before Pell’s funeral were overshadowed by fresh controversy stirred by confirmation that he had been the author of an anonymous letter on the next conclave that circulated last year describing Francis’s papacy a “disaster,” and also a recent article Pell wrote describing Francis’s upcoming Synod of Bishops on synodality as a “toxic nightmare.”

Father McDonald, thank you for your reply.

Is Sandro Magister the only source of "confirmation" in regard to Demos' alleged identity?

Again, if the claim in question is true, then it is undeniable that Cardinal Pell is two-faced in regard to his comments related to Pope Francis.

The vile, anonymous, "Demos" attack against Pope Francis is contrary to the open, and holy manner, in which Cardinal Pell had conducted himself publicly.

Cardinal Pell had rejected claims that he opposed Pope Francis.

Cardinal Pell had gone as far as having declared that we are to "reverence," as well as "obey," the Pope.

Cardinal Pell:

"The papacy is something, I believe, is willed by Christ and we have to respect the office, reverence the man and obey the papal directions."

Only a liar would declare the above publicly, then speak, and act, in opposite fashion as "Demos."

That does not correspond to that which we know about the public Cardinal Pell. But if he authored the "Demos" letter, then Cardinal Pell's integrity has been shattered.

Anyway, the following is certain, and on the public record:

Cardinal Pell characterized Pope Francis as an orthodox, true son of Holy Mother Church...a wonderful Pope and man.

It is what it is and thank God Cardinal Pell said what he said. The abuse DNA in the Church that perpetuated the abuse scandal is built upon deference to those in religious authority and giving them a pass or supporting poor leadership. Please deal with the facts of Pell’s assertions. These are true.

Hopefully, everyone will provide some latitude regarding MT's discussion with Fr. AJM. MT is entitled to his thoughts, feelings and experiences both on and off this blog - the same as anyone else. I suspect that give the esteem he has for the HF, acceptance of the facts might be challenging.

My own feelings regarding this papacy are consistent with many, if not most here. I neither expect, nor necessarily want MT to become a new like-type voice. That would likely be inconsistent with his belief system in addition to being unrealistic. Nonetheless, and as counseled by our priest host/moderator, I hope MT comes to understand and accept that all is not as well within the Church as he has, and will likely continue to maintain is not the case.

At the end of the day, a period of healing will be required at such time that this papacy finds its conclusion. Those on both sides would be well advised to understand, learn from and pray that the holy spirit guides the Church against such errors and behaviors going forward. For this to occur, introspection and charity will be required on both sides. For the good of Christ's Church, let us hope all will be willing to do this.

Mark, ardinal Pell is nt being inconsistent to characterize Pope Francis as a good man but a terrible Pope. That can coexist.

Mark Thomas,

“A wonderful pope and man?” LOL - I am sure there were folks who made such ludicrous comments about Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin

OF COURSE Cardinal Pell was not opposed to Pope Francis. I doubt if any of us are.

THE OPPOSITION IS TO HIS ACCURSED DESTRUCTION OF THE CHURCH.

Byz - I have always wondered about the coffins on the floor which we see in Rome. I don't know if it is an Italian/Roman/Vatican thing, though.

Father McDonald, I have focused upon Cardinal Pell and his alleged connection to the Demos letter. I have dealt with the facts in regard to that matter.

Are you talking about Cardinal Pell's assertions in regard to the Spectator article? If so, I have not discussed that matter.

Thank you.

One very naive little boy somehow can't grasp that what bishops and cardinals say in public does not always line up with their personal ideas or feelings, especially with regard to the people they answer to.

There are very likely a number of bishops and cardinals, like Pell, who keep their mouths shut and defend their bosses, even when they disagree, because they believe they can do more good by staying in the game than speaking their true thoughts and getting dismissed.

Managing public information is a huge part of this game. However, some people are just credulous enough to believe whatever the Vatican press office releases for public consumption.
