UPDATE ON OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY, SAN DIEGO

In fact, as Father Kavanaugh stated, an altar railing has been restored and to the original location, although not made of wood but of white marble which blends in with the white marble floor when photographed from the choir loft. But it is there and quite nice. Glad the parish restored it!

Pre-Vatican II look:

Restored and renovated look today:

Hopefully, they will do something about that free standing altar which is so out of place compared the original altar still there!

Father McDonald,

Thanks for sharing. I could not find this picture showing the altar railing and I could not believe Father K would have said it was there when it was not. I wonder if there are two pages, one which shows it and an earlier photo that does not? I suspect the altar railing would have been the very last thing that was installed

I could not find it on their website but I did a google image search of the church and there it was.

Now, I just don't know. It is there is some still pix, but the video of the current masses, it is not there.

The one with the altar rail may be a C. Schmidt design pic - they can look very real these days.

A fine restoraton! Perhaps the main altar could have been detached from the reredos and moved forward six feet or so, alowing celebrant(s) either to face liturgical East or to face the congregation.

I just look at their Mass and there is no altar railing, however, the video, before you play it, has the interior of the church with the altar railing. Very strange, maybe you are right, that it is a virtual rendering of something to be installed later?

William’s suggestion would enhance the beauty of the sanctuary and be practical as well

Beautifully done. I agree the multi-color columns and arches are a bit busy, but when compared to the pre-VII photo, it appears they have always been this way. Overall, the integrity of the original design appears to have been preserved. Well done.

Perhaps one day the lower altar can be removed as there's a perfectly good high altar waiting to be used.
