THE HYPOCRISY OF THE BOSTON GLOBE ON THE MANNER IN WHICH IT TREATS A JEWISH RABBI WHO SEXUALLY ABUSED A 16 YEAR BOY

Rabbi allegedly misused funds to keep liaison with teen quiet

You can read the Boston Globe's (by pressing HERE)straight forward report, without editorializing in a negative way about Judaism in general or rabbis in particular. What you will find missing are the terms "child sexual abuse" or "Pedophilia" or homosexual liaison. It is treated as a romantic get together that goes wrong and leads to extortion. The rabbi paid his 16 year old "boy friend" almost $500,000 to keep quiet. The headline only indicates teen, not his gender or age. If this had been a priest, how do you think the headline would have read?

This is sad for everyone involved. My point in printing this is to show you how the press differentiates in reporting these crimes when it comes to Catholic priests. The Catholic priest would have been called an abuser, a pedophile and removed from ministry immediately.

How do you read this story?

Hang on, the money was not paid to the teen, but to the 16-year-old's brother, who had been blackmailing the rabbi. No matter how sordid the rabbi's behaviour, extortion/blackmail is a truly dreadful crime, and its victims deserve sympathy, even if they have abused their position and the trust placed in them.

From the media's perspective, this was a consensual relationship, rather than an abusive one. I can't accept that logic, or the laws that it is grounded on. But I can understand why the media are treating this man somewhat more sympathetically than they would most abuse cases.

"Jewish" rabbi is redundant. Have you ever met a Buddhist rabbi, or a Seventh Day Adventist rabbi?

It is understandable that there may be sympathy for a victim of blackmail. However, if the acts for which he is blackmailed occurred, and if they are as has been described, then regardless of the blackmail, he should be accorded no more mercy than were many priests.

This is hypocrisy, and I think it plays out this way because a) the liberal position is favorable to the gay agenda, and b) a rabbi, any rabbi, is less formidable opposition to their goals than the priests of our Church.

I know a couple of Christian rabbis, Messianic Jews, who normally aren't recognized by authentic Jews.
