Nice voices, but...

"Unvaccinated clusters allow Covid to mutate and put everyone at risk, doctor says"

Yes and some believe that people can claim the opposite sex or non binary. So much for the demagogues of science. No credibility whatsoever.

It's the words (lyrics) that are set to music, not the other way round.

First time I've read that vaccines prevent viral mutation, and I try to keep up with the (real) science. Who's this anonymous doctor?

BTW, I fully support the vaccine programme, so the query is a genuine one.

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

Mutations which lead to variants occur when viruses replicate.

Fewer replications, fewer mutations, fewer variants.

Vaccines can reduce the chance that host organisms, humans in this case, will become infected.

Other precautions - masks, distancing (no parties in the garden at Number 10), sanitizing hands - also reduce the transmission rate.

Unfortunately there is no consensus on the pandemic and there has been so much conflicting advice - particularly from the so-called expert in the US, Anthony Fauci. I have been vacinnated and boostered but I have to tell you, in the last 40 years, I have had the cold or flu just a couple of times so I suspect my immune system is strong to begin with. It will likely be years before all of this is sorted out.

Fr. Allan J. McDonald said...

Eliminating the pandemic common chalice must be included as well as doorknobs and hands!

Sophia says: Re Covid-19. Here is the latest-Omicron. And it's replicating at lightning speed-already accounts for 98% of infections here. Vaccines are totally ineffective against becoming infected with it or spreading it to others. So both vaccinated and unvaccinated alike can become infected and can also spread it to others. Too bad the Supreme Court did not base it's ruling upholding the CMS vaccine mandate for Healthcare providers and others accepting Medicaid/Medicare payments directly or by working in facilities accepting Medicare/Medicaid, on the actual facts about vaccines and Omicron, the variant causing most infections now. These vaccines can neither prevent infections nor their spread- the original premise of the mandate!
The earliest information coming out of S. Africa which first reported the Omicron variant (Nov. 24) said that it promised to be much, much more contagious than all previous variants including Delta- and the original. However, thanks be to God, as can happen with viruses over time, it was also projected to cause a much milder illness. The experience all over the world has confirmed this analysis as Omicron spread throughout many countries, including the U.S. The pressure on hospitals is partly because of sheer volume and rapidity of spread- smaller percentage of a greater volume still adds up! But the situation is compounded by hospitalizations for other reasons and staff shortages- due to mandates, burnout, and absences due to infections with Omicron.

S. Africa also reports that Omicron is milder even in the unvaccinated.

Here are the observations from a preliminary study of nearly 70,000 Covid-19 patients in Southern California, Nov. 30- Dec 1. There were 52,000 with Omicron, and only 17,000 with Delta because within one month Omicron was already nearly 75% of the cases. Here is The link-very interesting:

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

"Study findings suggest spread of Omicron can be ascribed to immune evasiveness rather than an increase in transmissibility" (South Africa study results)

"To summarize, the study findings demonstrate that unvaccinated persons were more susceptible to infection by the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant, whereas booster-vaccinated individuals were less susceptible as compared to fully vaccinated individuals in Delta VOC-infected households. Furthermore, a lower susceptibility for booster-vaccinated individuals was detected among those living in families infected with the Omicron VOC. In addition, there was enhanced transmissibility from unvaccinated individuals and decreased transmissibility from booster-vaccinated individuals.

Moreover, unvaccinated, fully vaccinated, and booster-vaccinated people had a higher transmission rate in households infected with the Omicron VOC as compared to the Delta variant. When comparing the Omicron variant to the Delta variant, unvaccinated individuals had a 1.17 times higher SAR, whereas fully vaccinated and booster-vaccinated individuals had a 2.61 and 3.66 times higher SAR, respectfully. These observations provide strong evidence of immune evasion of the Omicron VOC.

The findings from the current study imply that booster immunization can lower Omicron VOC transmission in households. However, vaccination as an epidemic control strategy may falter due to the immunological evasiveness of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant."

Now for the anecdotal evidence. In my family fully immunized and bolstered members have become sick as dogs, one almost died, another in the hospital and a third at home. Good friend never immunized had it twice and both times mild symptoms. This is a manufactured virus, a part of germ warfare and defies science.

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

"This is a manufactured virus, a part of germ warfare and defies science."

Probably the most absurd and dangerous statement you have made on this blog.

(Oh, and let's not talk about the science, since it is just too hard for you to understand. Let's talk about anecdotes, since it's all about YOU and YOUR experiences.)

Funny comment from one paralyzed with fear over Covid 19 taking draconian measures since the beginning. But even Moreno from one who thinks the greatest health threat pre-pandemic was bringing dirty doorknobs and sink faucets to Mass but not the pandemic spreading common chalice. So much for liturgy and science.

But in terms of manufactured viruses escaping from China’s germ warfare labs, read this to stay informed and frightened:
https://news.stanford.edu/pr/01/bioterror117.html

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

People like you who did not take the virus seriously bear responsibility for the prolongation of the pandemic which, in turn, has lead to the proliferation of variants.

The greatest health threat is not doorknobs nor sink faucets, something you know I never said, but you lie now saying that I did.

Taking realistic precautions, not "draconian measures," to prevent the spread of a virus is not living in fear. You got your vaccine and booster - why are you "living in fear"?

The article from 2001 you link has NO mention of Covid, NO mention of cononavisus, NO mention of China. So much for your, "in terms of manufactured viruses escaping from China’s germ warfare labs."

For what it's worth, I have both my vaccinations and booster. I don't live in fear however, I don't operate as though its business as usual either. I take reasonable precautions to go about my business as normally as possible but, I'm not going to night clubs either (example scenario - the "kids" would laugh me out of the clubs at this juncture in my life).

Fr. Allan J. McDonald said...

Richmond Hill has never had a mask mandate, although some businesses have. St. Anne never mandated masks but I have asked people to use common sense. We are almost back to pre-pandemic numbers. No additional precautions, we invite people to make some kind of sign of peace, and we pass the basket and allow people to receive in the hand or tongue, never changed that.

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

OK - let's take a look . . . since you havent.

The item says: "Palestinian media argued that SARS-CoV-2 was a biological weapon being used by the US and Israel against China and Iran." Yeah, right...

"Other US officials suspected that the virus came from a Wuhan laboratory that was performing legitimate viral research..." Yes, we've heard this from the get-go, particularly from the right-wing loons who bought the "China Virus" nonsense from the former government employee who lived at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

"Considering China’s lack of transparency, concerns about an accidental release of a deadly microbe are understandable,..." Yes, again, this is nothing new. It wasn't new in Aug 2021 when it was written and it's not new now.

You might consider: "The highly anticipated U.S. intelligence review, delivered to Biden on 24 August, reached no firm conclusions, but leaned toward the theory that the virus has a natural origin."

https://www.dni.gov/files/ODNI/documents/assessments/Unclassified-Summary-of-Assessment-on-COVID-19-Origins.pdf

Among the many, many things you would do well to learn from scientists is that is is perfectly OK to say "I don't know" when the data don't support your conclusions.

Fr. K., even a slow rate of replication allows for mutations. The issue is the desire for a high level of certainty, not accuracy, that has worked against us. When Government wants to claim a high level of authority based on unique knowledge it tends to make claims without qualifications, such as ‘slows’. Consequently, people will demand a solution and anything less than 100% is derided as doing nothing (e.g. the effectiveness of masks). The arrogant definitiveness of a statement that asserts no mutations undermines the Government’s authority.

The rate of mortality among the vaccinated is restricted almost exclusively to people who also suffer *several* other serious health issues such as heart, pulmonary, immune system disease. The deaths are statistically approaching zero for the vaccinated in good health, but that is little comfort those vaccinated who die anyway. I hope the disease eventually falls to a level of injury similar to influenza. But even that disease has a severe impact on the same vulnerable population as COVID.

Rcg,

You are trying to reason with a guy who votes for a party that says abortion is “healthcare.” You are wasting your time

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

rcg - With every vaccine there are breakthrough infections. No vaccine offers 100% protection. The person who expects 100% protection and whpo "derides" the science since 100% protection is not achieved is the problem, not the vaccine, not the studies support them.

Slowing the spread of the virus reduces the opportunities for the virus to replicate and the rise of dangerous variants. Driving slowly on roads covered with black ice will not eliminate 100% of accidents, but it will reduce the number and lessen the severity of the crashes.

The government claims no "unique knowledge." Studies are peer reviewed and published. Actions and recommendations based on those studies are open. However, when a technical paper is presented in support of actions/recommendations, people who, due to their lack of training and expertise, begin to whine about "elites." This is a reflection of their own ignorance, not of a lack of skill of judgment on the part of the experts.

Fr. Allan J. McDonald said...

FRMJK, no one, no matter how fast or slow should drive on black ice! Sheesh! People build up immunity, naturally or otherwise. Mexicans can drink all their water they want. You try that and you’re dead.

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

Fr. ALLAN McDonald - Tell the nurses, firefighters, police officers, electric company employees, etc., that they must not drive when there is black ice on the roads.

Tell me, did you wait to build up immunity to POLIO, or did you get vaccinated?

Fr. Allan J. McDonald said...

I know first hand they won't come out in a hurricane and no, definitely they should not come out on black ice! Common sense of course.

I have been double vaccined and once boostered; I also had around the same time, my double dose of the shingles vaccine and also the old person's version of the flu shot.

I think I had omicron, nonetheless, no worse than a sinus cold with stopped up ears. Did I get tested to find out. Hell no, just as I have never been tested to see if I had the flu when I darn well knew I had it!

And yes, I almost died from pnenonia when I was 30 years old. Things happen! I was and am prepared for the last four things, death, judgement, heaven and hell. And I fear hell more than Covid-19 and I fear isolation more than covid 19.

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

Fr. ALLAN McDonald - When the essential workers don't get to their posts and your water and electricity are gone, you'll be the first to howl that your toes are cold and you porridge isn't hot. SO when you say, "... no one, no matter how fast or slow should drive on black ice!" you're being disingenuous. To paraphrase Col. Jessup, before he incriminated himself in the murder of a marine at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, "You WANT them there, you NEED them there!"

And, yes, you were vaccinated against POLIO and you are very glad you did not wait to build up immunity.

You can live in fear all you want, something you accuse others of all the time. I live in gratiude for a loving and merciful God. You ought to try it sometime.

Your normal modus operandi of smoke and mirrors and shifting the conversation, I know and everyone else knows I have won and yes, as usual. Kudos to me.

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

In your dreams.

And as long as you are all about worrying what "...everyone else knows..." and not content within yourself, you'll still live in fear of hell, among other things.
