IN 1979, POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II HAD 2.5 MILLION AT HIS MASS IN PHOENIX PARK; 500,000 WERE EXPECTED FOR FRANCIS, CHURCH OFFICIALS ESTIMATED 300,000 ACTUALLY SHOWED UP, SECULAR OFFICIALS SAY IT WAS 150,000

How many do you think? I think it was about 150,000, but I need a magnifying glass to finish my count.

The following news reports may shed light in regard to the amount worshipers at the Mass:

-- "Sunday saw massive amounts of rain from the early hours of the morning, resulting in a huge washout of the park, with pilgrims forced to trek through blowing gales and constant downpour for much of the 3km walk."

-- "Many reported that although they had secured their tickets for the event, the amount of walking from the park entrance to their standing position prevented them from attending, especially for the elderly or infirm."

-- "A ban on mobility scooters and large prams from the Phoenix Park hindered parents with young children or people with mobility issues from attending."

-- "Those with mobility scooters were told weeks ago that as there would be no chargers at the event meaning organizers ran the risk of scooters breaking down."

-- "Large umbrellas and deckchairs were among the many banned items from the park, meaning pilgrims would have to carry foldaway chairs while braving the elements."

Pax.

or maybe the fact that PF has no credibility left and no one cared to come. people practically walked over "hot coals" to see JPII and almost as much for the "unpopular" PBXVI. But then "who are we to judge". The cat is out of the bag, and it is mangy, PF has proven to be a lib theocracy type "Marxism with salsa" love that term, now trying an Obama, "I didn't know about it till I read it in the media". Vigano had better watch his back for shivs and albino monks

MT,

Give it up and grow up.

Now, now. Everyone knows that the weather was sooooo much better during the pontificate of JPII, and that global warming is to blame for the dismal turnouts for HHPF. This is why during his pontificate, Francis speaks so much about global warming, and so little of Christ.

Im not sure it matters how many people show up. People can stay away for a variety if reasons: weather, unpopularity of the Pope or opposition to Church teaching. Unless i knew why people didnt show up i couldnt say whether the crowd size was good bad or indifferent.

In the meantime, i could do with fewer open air Papal Masses. The Pope isnt supposed to be a rock star. He’s supposed to be a rock.

Sort of stating the obvious here, but the atmosphere for the Catholic church in Ireland has changed drastically since 1979, for reasons that have nothing to do with Francis, and most of the lovely old folks who thronged to the Mass 39 years ago have likely gone to their heavenly reward. I think you'd find that Benjamin also didn't get the same sort of crowds as JP2, 20 or 25 years later.

"500,000 were expected but less than 130,000 people showed up for Pope Francis' Dublin Mass, TheJournal.ie (August 26) reported.

"The Mass was expected to be the main event of the pro-gay World Meeting of Families and one of the largest events ever to be organised in Ireland.

"Francis' flop was foreseeable. Since the beginning of his pontificate, Francis has alienated simple and pious Catholics who used to be present at gatherings with the pope.

"Now he is left with the liberal establishment which is happy about the damage he does to the Church but, obviously does not care about attending his Masses."

Maybe the Irish aren't as "gay friendly" as the organizers had hoped. What maroons
