Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on recent criticisms of Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington:
It is one thing for the laity to be angry about recent revelations regarding former cardinal Theodore McCarrick, and the Pennsylvania grand jury report on molesting priests (which is riddled with lies), it is quite another to allow emotion, not reason, to guide one’s perspective on these twin scandals. Yet that is what is happening.

There is one thing about which William Donahue is correct in regard to the McCarrick Scandal/Pennsylvania Report:
The haters who have utilized the McCarrick Scandal and Pennsylvania Report are found "especially the right. They’ve become delirious."
The purpose of the attacks led by "traditional" Catholics is to attempt to discredit Vatican II, "Vatican II Popes"..."New Rome, New Church."
I refused the other day to have joined the lynch mob, both secular and Catholic, that, to advance their respective agendas, formed following the release of the Pennsylvania Report.
The secular lynch mob formed, of course, to attack Catholicism.
Again, the "traditional" Catholic lynch mob formed to attack Vatican II/Vatican II Popes..."New Rome, New Church."
I am thankful that I had distanced myself from the lynch mobs in question.
I didn't trust the Pennsylvania Report as said report exists only to trash Catholicism.
Deo gratias that William Donahue has led the way among those who has exposed the Pennsylvania Report as anti-Catholic trash. In turn, he has been berated by certain folks for having done so.
But Deo Gratias for William Donahue.

Two things:
I know the report includes allegations from long ago, but I believe the report was meant to investigate how long and widespread the issues have been and NOT meant to reflect what happened last month.
What exactly is wrong in looking at the issue from this perspective? How is looking at complaints that have been filed anti-Catholic just because Catholics happen to been the accused AND accusers?
Has it been considered that people are upset NOT because they are anti-Catholic, but because they LOVE the Church?
Donohue is a bull dog defender of the Church and often takes a polar opposite position strictly to establish the best position as somewhere between him and his opponent. His arguments have merit by challenging the method but not the specifics. I have no doubt the prosecutors involved lept at the case for less than altruistic reasons and tilt at the Church as an ancient enemy that also is good for their career. However, they have found a chink to dig at that we have not just over looked but designed into our structure. Cardinal Wuerl does not need to be punished the same way that the preditor preists should be. To be treated justly he can be coached or guided from below as an example to others how to handle this situation. Certainly if he protected the preists and brother bishops preferentially to protecting their victims then he should be removed. But I believe a strong case can be made, as Donohue does, that the Cardinal(s) were following the prevailing wisdom of that age, as did the ones who now prosecute the Church. Cardinal Burke mentioned the link between the money scandals and the sex scandals. This is the next blow that may reshape the Church for a millennia.
