These photos tell the story. Two altars, same church. Which configuration inspires faith, awe, wonder and authentic Catholic Faith in the Mass:

There's something about carpet in a church that I don't like.

It was a fad in the 60's and 70's to carpet everything from churches to homes. Many homes in the south which had lovely hardwood floors were carpeted with wall to wall carpet (at least it preserved the hardwoods).

When I became pastor of the Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Augusta, Romanesque, ornate and completed in 1863, the entire church had a thick gray carpet on all the aisles and in the sanctuary. One day I pulled back the carpet in the sanctuary only to see a beautiful marble tile with patterns. I called the priest who carpeted it and asked if the marble floors were in bad condition and that's why all was carpeted. He said no, he put the carpet down to kill the echo in the church. I removed the carpet some years later and it had beautiful historic marble tile everywhere and in great condition.

The same is true of St. Joseph's Rectory. It was wall to wall carpeted in the 60's or 70's and that same carpet was still there when I got there in 2004! I removed it all and restored the beautiful hardwood floors there!

Needs banners, and maybe a BIG shirt.
