The Holy Father, in reference to Cardinal Zen, touts His Holiness’ desire to always dialogue and listen when it comes to the complexities of Communist (Red) China! This is the same pope who refused to meet with Cardinal Zen when the cardinal sought a meeting with Francis when Zen was in Rome! And the Holy Father has said little if nothing about the Cardinal’s arrest and upcoming trial. How do you spell scandalous?
There is some poetic Justice as the Chinese dictator refused to meet with the pope when they were both in Eurasia/Kazakhstan! And the Russian Orthodox snubbed the Pope too and the second highest ranking Russian Orthodox prelate accused the pope of name calling insults, which this pope has a compulsion to do, by referring to Krill as an altar boy. The prelate said the pope was unecumenical.

The current successor to St. Peter is a disgrace. The Holy Spirit can certainly inspire the Cardinal electors, but He does not force them to follow His providential guidance.
Hard to say what happened, but usually there are very low key preliminary discussions and it may have been discovered that Xi would not meet with The Pope. The result would be a public rebuff to demonstrate the irrelevance of The Church to China and put us in our place, especially in the minds of the Chinese citizens and the parts of the world where China offers an alternative to Western imperialism.
It was probably wise to avoid it.
