Terrible news. In five years, he will be unable to vote in a conclave, which is even worse.

This got me thinking: Most of us who post here aren't exactly thrilled with our current pope, however, it cannot be denied that he is closer to the end of his pontificate than the beginning. I only bring this up because it has been so appalling to see the vile, obscene reactions many of Rush Limbaugh's detractors have either stated or published since his death. I would STRONGLY urge those of us who aren't Francis fans (probably everyone here except Mark Thomas) to avoid falling into the same trap. When someone dies, friend or foe, exemplar or opposition, we need to be respectful and pray for the repose of the person's soul, lest we lose our own dignity and place our own soul in peril.

Rush Limbaugh? Was listening to a podcast with Jesse Romero and he shared this: While visiting Florida and delivering lectures in Spanish to a Hispanic group, a man who spoke no English approached Romero and told him he reminded him of Rush Limbaugh. Romero asked him how he knew about Rush Limbaugh, since he didn't speak English. The man told him that Rush was his boss! Evidently this man was the gardener/landscaper for Rush. He told Romero that Rush's house was filled with CRUCIFIXES, CATHOLIC STATUES and medieval art. He also said that there was a Catholic priest who came and spoke in private with Rush once a week for an hour or two.

Was Rush in the process of converting? Did he have the Baptism of Desire? It might be a "tell" when we see what kind of funeral he has.

Father McDonald,

Is the timing of this resignation customary? I noticed the Cardinal is over 75.

One of the few truly good men holding an office. Even if his position has been completely neutered for years, same as what happened to Mueller.

Rush Limbaugh, when he wasn't buying and using illegal drugs, was a man who, with glee and for his own material benefit, advanced the normalization of bigotry, racism, and cruelty.

If you find the truth vile and obscene, then so be it.

May God be merciful to all the departed.

I was certainly not unexpected. I hope this will give Cardinal Sarah much more time to write. He has been more influential for the liturgy through his books than in his position at the CDF, being chastised and cancelled by powerful outside ideologues, like Cardinal Nichols and even Pope Francis, whenever he tried to make the liturgy holier.

Of course this was not unexpected and the Cardinal submitted his resignation back in June I think, when he turned 75.

The biggest worry is who will replace him. That will say a lot. But we have to keep in mind that Pope Francis chose Cardinal Sarah to be the head of the CDF six years or more ago.

Apart from pushing "inculturation" more and perhaps an Amazon Rite, I don't see any major changes to the liturgy under Pope Francis and he has not killed the EF Mass.

His own style of celebrating Mass and liturgies is by the book although listlessly.

I suspect he will choose someone who will move forward with the Amazon Rite and inculturation as well as promoting women as acolytes and lectors formally installed.

Believe it or not, it IS possible to express disagreement with someone without resorting to vulgar language, scatological references and puerile name-calling. Some of us lived in an age when that was actually the norm.

If you think condescension and sanctimony can justify the use of such incivility, so be it.

May God give us all a more merciful heart.

Liberals, as well as "traditional" Catholics, claimed that Cardinal Sarah was at war with Pope Francis.

Cardinal Sarah rejected said claims. He said that the claims in question were from the Devil.

Cardinal Sarah:

"Those who place me in opposition to the Holy Father cannot present a single word of mine, a single phrase or a single attitude of mine to support their absurd – and I would say, diabolical – affirmations. The devil divides, sets people against each other."

"The truth is that the Church is represented on earth by the Vicar of Christ, that is by the Pope. And whoever is against the Pope is, ipso facto, outside the Church."

Pax.

Mark Thomas

Telling the truth is not being uncivil.

Rush Limbaugh who, among other things, was "married" four times is not a person to be lauded in death.

I pray God is merciful to all the departed.

Judging from the list of recent papal audiences, my prediction from last spring is about to come to fruition! The next CDW prefect will be Vittorio Viola, currently Bishop of Tortona.

Like Cardinal Gambetti, who was appointed Archpriest of St Peter's on Saturday, Viola is a Franciscan. I think the original plan must have been to announce the two appointments at the same time, but the announcement of Viola's must have had to be delayed for some reason.

Your moral outrage runs strictly along party lines.

If confessing to a priest and having Catholic symbols around his house (antiques and collectors items, most likely) made Rush Limbaugh a better human being, well, that's great, Godspeed, God bless him. It would have been great if some shreds of Catholic decency, forgiveness, humility, honesty and charity had seeped into his public pronouncements. I am unaware of whether that actually happened.

Couch K,

LOL - like Biden’s “ catholic” pronouncements supporting abortion, gay marriage and transgenderism?
