CATHEDRAL’S SOLEMN SUNG HIGH MASS AT THE HIGH ALTAR

Watch a synopsis produced by our diocese HERE.

My comment: The cathedral’s High Altar is exactly the right height for this cathedral in terms of visibility even from the entrance of the Cathedral. Compared to how low the beautiful new altar is, one sees how obscure and insignificant it is in placement. And this causes an insurmountable distance  from it and the congregation. In fact in a full cathedral only the first few rows can see it and what happens at this altar especially when standing.

In addition, the high altar is one step higher than the cathedra and ambo symbolically showing it is most important whereas the new altar is three steps lower than the cathedra and ambo. Not a good symbol in terms of what that signifies.

Hard to visualize the new altar without a picture?

look at the diocesan video I link to the EF Mass there at the high altar, the first time that altar was used in 50 years, and you will catch glimpses of the new one in front of it. These glimpses motivated my comments as it is so obvious how insignificant it is in its placement and lack of the Benedictine altar arrangement, although the altar itself is very beautiful and its facade is the same as the high altar's.

They should just use that high altar all the time. The bishop should be a leader and not a follower.

Dear Father,
My children and I drive an hour one way each week to attend the TLM at the Cathedral. My son serves as an altar boy each week. The Solemn High Mass was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. Thank you for celebrating the Mass for us. It was a beautiful gift on the 3 year anniversary of my Confirmation into the Catholic Faith. God bless you Father.
