I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD BE AT THE CENTER OF TWO FIRSTS AT THE CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST IN SAVANNAH: MY FIRST, FIRST WAS THE CELEBRATION ON DECEMBER 8, 2019 OF THE SOLEMN SUNG TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS AT THE CATHEDRAL'S HIGH ALTAR WHICH HAD NOT BEEN USED SINCE AROUND 1966; MY SECOND FIRST WILL BE THE LAST TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS AT THE CATHEDRAL ON SUNDAY JULY 31, 2022 FOR THE 8TH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST: BE THERE OR BE SQUARE, LAFAYETTE SQUARE THAT IS, 1 PM!


ONE JOYOUS AND ONE SAD OF TWO FIRSTS FOR ME AND THE CATHEDRAL. 

I was the main celebrant for the TLM's Solemn Sung Mass for the Immaculate Conception, December 8, 2019, with deacon and subdeacon at the Cathedral's high altar, not used since about 1966 nor had this version of the TLM been celebrated at the Cathedral since the 1970 Roman Missal became mandatory. 

The Traditional Latin Mass is moving from the Cathedral in Savannah, to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Savannah, about six blocks away for the 9th Sunday after Pentecost, the first Sunday in August. I am sadly blessed to be the celebrant for the last Sunday TLM at our Cathedral. It has been there for almost fifteen years.

 Sacred Heart Church, too, is a Neo-gothic/Romanesque church and quite beautiful although I pray that one day it will be restored to its original look. It has a fine pipe organ and choir loft too.

Epistle (Romans 8: 12-17)

Gospel (Luke 16: 1-9)

Offertory (Psalms 17: 28, 32)

Secret

Communion (Psalms 33: 9) 

Gustáte et vidéte, quóniam suávis est Dóminus: beátus vir, qui sperat in eo.

Taste and see that the Lord is sweet: blessed is the man that hopes in Him.

Postcommunion

May this heavenly mystery be to us, O Lord, for renewal of mind and body: that we may enjoy the fruits of that which we celebrate. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who lives and reigns with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.

I saw Bishop Park's announcement re: TLM in the Savannah Diocese. It is a sad day all over the world. I just don't understand why this has to happen. The Novus Ordo, when celebrated as it should be is wonderful and it is the overwhelmingly dominant form of the Mass as far as I can tell. The TLM is no threat at all. Is this simply a power play by the Pope and his factotums? I have lived all over the USA and I have NEVER heard of any dissension in any diocese, lay or clergy, that would challenge the notion that the Novus Ordo is a. valid and b. the dominant and preferred form by most all Catholics. The TLM and it's adherents is/are not schismatic threats to Holy Mother Church. Why the obsession and suppression? Please help m understand.

Beyond comprehension and a walking backwards to the 1970’s antipathy for anything that smacks of our liturgical cultural heritage being canceled. It reminds me of what Canada did to indigenous cultures.

Don't be too sad Father. Unless the Cathedral is demolished this will not be the last Traditional Mass offered there. This season of liturgical stupidity will pass like a bad kidney stone.

I'm sorry to hear this is ending for both you, Fr. AJM as well as those devoted to this valid expression of mass. Hopefully, someday, liberation will again return.

That aside, your graphics usage recently has been spot on!

It's unfortunate to see the traditional Latin Mass come to an end at the cathedral, but I'm sure you will be a great celebrant for the last one there. My now fiancé and I are going to be in Savannah for our honeymoon in the Fall and I was looking forward to attending the TLM there. It's a sad state of affairs with the Church these days in that when I'm away from my home parish, I seek out the TLM since I don't know what to expect with our typical Roman Rite Mass.

You should be proud of your ministry there. Fortunately, most bishops have ignored this odious decree. I saw a recent survey where no more than 10% of the TLMs have been cancelled world wide.
