I was lucky to hear Fr. Cioffi (RIP 2004) one of the times I attended the Seton Hall Summer institute for priests which was held then at the Redemptorist retreat house in Long Branch, New Jersey, at what they charmingly refer to as "the shore." He was quite a character, very excitable, and engaging as a speaker.

From his obit: "In 'Gospel Spirituality and Catholic Worship,' (publ 2001 with William P. Sampson, SJ) in his many retreats for diocesan clergy and through his ministry at the Institute for Pastoral Renewal (Georgetown University), Cioffi helped priests to get underneath what they are really doing in preaching, presiding, and celebrating the great signs of our redemption." That would be good for all of us.

During his course at the Seton Hall program he showed a video called "How Not To Say Mass." In a room full of diocesan clergy, about 40 of us, the laughter was almost out of control. Everything that could go wrong, from the alb being stuck in the celebrant's belt to the bells falling apart as they were rung for the consecration, it was a hoot. I wish I could get a copy of it these days.

I also attended the Seton Hall program, but the one offered in Palm Beach at the Redemptorist retreat center. I think I saw him at the one in 2004. He was a very engaging teacher. He is not to be confused with another Fr. Cioffi from Trenton who taught in my seminary and during a small group Mass in his seminary apartment he set the altar on the floor, we sat Indian style and he passes the elements he consecrated (NOT) to us as he said the words of institution and of course there was nothing left of the "consecrated" (NOT) elements for the offering the of Sacrifice as this was just a meal, a convivial meal. What a mess.

And in our chapel, the faux Cioffi would say at the "This is the Lamb of God" something like this, This is the Lamb of God, look at who you are and see who you can become."
On his birthday the seminarians gave him a mirror!
