A POSTIVE DEVELOPMENT FROM CHICAGO AND ITS ARCHBISHOP, CARDINAL CUPICH

Kudos to Father Bart Juncer, pastor of St. Odilo’s Church in Berwyn, Illinois.  I copy a portion of his last Sunday's bulletin letter. It is very pastoral, positive and Catholic! God bless his minsitry and the parishioners of this National Shrine of the Poor Souls!

Distribution of Holy Communion at a school Mass!

National Shrine of the Poor Souls

St. Odilo Church is the only parish in the United States dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory. It was founded and sanctioned as the Shrine of the Poor Souls by His Eminence, George Cardinal Mundelein in 1928, with a special indulgence of 200 days granted upon each visit to the shrine.

"As I announced at the Masses last Sunday, Cardinal Cupich has given us his decision for the future celebration of the Latin Mass in accord with the Pope’s directives of Traditiones Custodis. The Cardinal has given us his permission to continue offering one weekend Mass in Latin as we have been. The Latin Mass will, with the Cardinal’s blessing, continue to be celebrated ad orientem. The
one difference His Eminence asks of us is that the priest celebrate the Latin Mass according to the missal of Sts. Paul VI and John Paul II, as in the vernacular Masses. The Cardinal’s directives will be effected this Sunday, today, at the 10:00 morning Mass, which will continue to be our Sunday Latin Mass.
Let this occasion be a time to remind us to continue to pray for Pope Francis and our Archbishop, Cardinal Cupich, that they will teach, govern and sanctify us according to the example of Christ and the apostolic tradition."

God be with you all this week, and let us pray for each other.
Fr. Bart

Given other developments in Chicago, I was pleasantly surprised when Cardinal Cupich made this exception to his anti-ad orientem edict. This is a very nice parish which I have had the privilege of attending Mass there dozens of times over the years. The schola for the 10 AM Mass does an excellent job with both chant and polyphony. I recall many years ago, when the 10 AM Mass started out as the EF, there were just a handful of people in attendance but over the years the numbers grew considerably and became one of the best attended Mass at the parish. They would hand out Missalettes with both English and Spanish translations. I was the old coot, most attendees were young families with children which certainly does not fit the "progressive" narrative.
