INDEED, HE’S RAMPING IT UP!

A bit shocking, though, there’s no central crucifix or true Benedictine altar arrangement, but that too, I suspect, will be ramped up to include, maybe, the old high altar being used and of course ad orientem. Anyone want to place a bet?

Very handsome vestments. I suspect you are right about the good bishop. When this rigid papacy ends, there will be an explosion of traditional religious practice and the surviving lefties will be apoplectic

Quite the odd-fitting chasuble. Note to the bishop: "A LITTLE lace goes a long way."

A Roman chasuble without an amice just doesn't look right. All the same, chalk one up for our side.

Fr. K,

LOL - you never change. You should comment on PF’s vestiture and demeanor - hint, not good

I think part of the problem with how this Roman Vestment looks on him is that he did not cross the stole underneath the chasuble which it should be with this style of vestment that hangs low from the neck.

Though bishops never crossed their stoles. Perhaps if he wore a pontifical dalmatic?

Yikes, I did not know that. But yes the pontifical Dalmatic would help.

"Low from the neck"?? Heck, it's low from the xiphoid process at the bottom of his sternum!

And what of the tunicle? In "The Low Churchman's Guide to the Solemn High Mass" we read, "Scientists have as yet been able to discover any difference between the dalmatic and the tunicle. This may indicate that the garments are in fact identical, or it may simply mean that the distinction between them is only observable at the subatomic level."

FrK,

The bishop is a refined, elegant man and undoubtedly knows far more about proper vestiture than you. He had Pope Benedict looking marvelous. Unfortunately Benedict’s successor lacks style and liturgical knowledge and never looks quite put together. I guess that is part of the “humble” act

TJM,

You have to admit, it looks like he's vested in his big brother's chasuble. Good to wear what's in the closet I suppose. As for the miles of lace, not my thing. If it was a wedding, he'd be competing with the bride I think (he shouldn't look prettier than her). Hopefully, time will enable a wardrobe to be assembled that is better suited to his height frame.

It is correct that bishops do not cross their stoles as the pectoral cross occupies that space in the middle. That said, wearing the pectoral cross over the chasuble in the Western Church shouldn't be done though many favor this. It wouldn't bother me if the cross was on a metal chain as the cords overtop of a chasuble just looks strange.

ByzRus,

Please explain how much more you know about vestiture than Bishop Marini

You are a difficult one to have an exchange with if one isn't in total agreement with you.

Not that an explanation is owed, however and to me, the chasuble looks oversized and all the lace is just too busy. A subtle edge detail, fine, this just has a lot going on. Really, have your opinion, I don't have to share it.

ByzRus,

I will go with Bishop Marini on this one
