SPEAKING OF SLAPPING HANDS, HOW KOSHER ARE THESE PRE-VATICAN II ELEMENTS OF THE ORDER OF THE MASS INCORPORATED INTO THE POST-VATICAN II ORDER OF THE MASS????

Filmed  on one of Savannah's historic squares, designed by the Englishman, and colonizer, James Ogletorpe, and in the Diocese of Savannah:

Today’s post Vatican II parishes and liturgies as well as priests and congregations are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’ll get.

All kinds of strange things, that are not in the Reformed Roman Missal, are dragged into the Mass, especially questionable aspects of people’s cultures and often pre-evangelized cultural aspects.

One also finds priests ad libbing the Mass parts, inserting his personality and piety or lack thereof and all on display in an entertainment sort of way no matter how bad and jarring. There is no Custodius Traditionis written to reign this in whatsoever.

Even during the penitential act, a priest or deacon might make up the tropes of the “c” form of options for this “act”, completely make it up and without any slap on the hand. I know from experience.

Thus and I ask in all sincerity, are the following “additions” to the post-Vatican II “revised/reformed” Mass kosher and/or any worse than what happens in so any Ordinary Form Masses with complete disregard to “traditional” aspects of this Mass?

While it is completely acceptable for bishops, priests and deacons to adjust the revised and/or reformed Mass with ad libs, untraditional additions and elimination of some parts even of the reformed Mass, how wrong would it be to do this to the Reformed Mass which is celebrated in the dead language of Latin?

I honestly ask!

1. At the Penitential Act, the traditional pre-Vatican II Confiteor rather than the revised version? Keep in mind those who make up the tropes of the “c” form of this act.

2. The use of the pre-Vatican II Offertory Prayers, prayed silently? Keep in mind those who either combine the modern offertory prayers into one action or, as I have seen, like the modern Episcopal Liturgy, eliminate it altogether.

3. The Roman Canon as it appears in the 1962 Roman Missal with all the additional body and hand gestures and its rubrical instructions. Think of the made up canons like St. Sabina’sin Chicago, and Cardinal Cupich completely ignores it and chastises those who want the 1962 Roman Missal or its elements in the modern Mass!

4. The triple Dominus Non sum Dignus?

5. The Last Gospel as a postlude to the Mass?

Well, I am waiting for legitimate responses

My observations (for what they are worth).

1. The problem with the Actus Poenitentialis in the OF is not the short Confiteor (the Tridentine one is very long compared with other rites and uses - the Novus Ordo form is very similar to the Dominican, for example). It is that it is said only once, by priest and people together. The Communion rite is similarly telescoped. This is a departure from traditional practice but is part and parcel of the new Mass, and dates from 1967. It would not be 'kosher' to replace either.

2. Regarding the Offertory, the prayers are normally said inaudibly so no-one would notice if the Tridentine ones were used, and the Ordinariate missal sets a precedent. Older rites offer the bread and wine together, and the prayers vary, but include a version of the Suscipe Sancta Trinitas. In the Tridentine rite this is said between the Lavabo and the Orate Fratres, and should never have been dropped. Reinstate it.

3. You can get away with praying the Canon in a low voice, and reinstating at least some of the traditional rubrics swept away in 1967. At the Oxford Oratory the priests always conjoin thumb and forefinger after the consecration and the ablutions are in the traditional manner.

4. The Last Gospel can be read as it would be after the Mass has ended. Similarly the old Asperges rite can be used as it happens before the Mass itself.

Bear in mind what GIRM 42 says about the gestures and posture of the priest: 'Attention should be paid to what is determined by this General Instruction and the traditional practice of the Roman Rite'. That gives you a fair amount of leeway.

Well father i am no authority on this but if i may chime in here are some tridentine mass aspects which i think would flow in well with the Novus Ordo :

1. Saying the psalm "Judica Me"in the sacristy or during the procession to the altar and saying the prayer "aufer a nobis" and "oramus te" in its prescribed places. Plus making the sign of the cross on one's self during the "Misereatur"

2. Keeping the NO's offertory prayers (i think it would be really illicit to change this) but adding the Tridentine Mass's "Veni sanctificator" and "suscipe sancta trinitas" with its prescribed actions. Bonus point if when using incense the psalm "incensum istud" is prayed (as how Pope Benedict XVI did).

3. When using the Roman Canon adding the sign of the cross at the "Corpus et sanguis fiant Domini nostri Iesu Christi" and the word "Benedixit" during the consecration proper.

4. Keeping the canonical digits until the ablution.

5. Saying both of the Priest's pre-communion prayers. Then abluting with both wine and water.

6. Praying the "Placeat tibi" at the end of Mass.
