For those who have longed for a way to injure the Catholic Church (destruction, of course, won't happen), perhaps they have now found a way, at least here in the United States. I'm afraid that the holy arrogance of the hierarchy, thinking they are somehow above the laws of the area to which they are resident, will help this scandal to live on indefinitely. The sinful apostasy of those who committed these crimes while at the same time preaching about temptation, sin, damnation, tithing etc. is just unfathomable.
I will say it again, all these reparations, healing services etc. will certainly bear reactive spiritual fruit however, until there is contrition within the hierarchy and the clergy generally regarding these crimes, their origin and what proactive measures will be taken to prevent similar instances going forward (concrete reform of clergy formation, seminary life etc), all that is currently being offered by the bishops as well as the pope is nothing more than empty platitudes. Will this be hard on those good priests who have done nothing? No question. At the same time, someone has to take responsibility for those brother priests of theirs who choose, for whatever reason, not to take moral responsibility for themselves. And, at this juncture, should the self-governing Church, particularly here in the U.S. choose to continue failing to manage, our civil authorities seem to be more than willing to step in and provide the oversight that they feel is necessary and lacking.
