WHY DO I FEEL SO UNEASY BY THESE PUBLIC, LOOK AT ME, ACTS OF REPARATION BY BISHOPS AND PRIESTS?

A woman administers ashes on the forehead of Father Brad Zamora during a prayer service for repentance and healing for clergy sexual abuse which included prayers for victims, abusers and the church, Aug. 22 at Our Lady of the Brook in Northbrook, Ill. (CNS photo/Karen Callaway, Chicago Catholic)
I just don’t like it. It rubs me the wrong way. Doing acts of reparation, penance, prayer and almsgiving should be in private as the Gospel for Ash Wednesday suggests, not a public photo op!

Wouldn’t wearing hidden haircloth underwear, flagellation done in private, secretly giving alms be sufficient and wearing one’s clerics no matter where, such as on vacation, be public enough penance?

What do you think? 🤔

All of this “for the camera” stuff is silly. These bishops and priests and now the pope himself have made the Church into a laughing stock.

Just for a start, why is Wuerl still the archbishop of DC.

It was proven by the state that he protected, among others, priests who were running a child porn ring. Case closed. Not only should he not be the Archbishop, he shouldn’t be a Cardinal, and he should be laicized. And the pope should have removed him ASAP. But he was not removed so we now that zero tolerance is a lie.

Everyone, without exception who I know who use to LOVE Pope Francis, all of them, without exception now think he is a total fraud and a phony. The bishops have no credibility left at all and they are dreaming if they think they do.

I will not leave the Church because of this but I will never give a dime to the Church again and I will never set foot inside a Novus Ordo parish again. I will only attend Traditional Catholic Mass and other services. Not to say that Traditional Catholics don’t have issues, but it is nothing compared to the filth of the Novus Ordo Church. Let Francis have his phony synods and push all kinds of heresy and filth. It is not going to affect me. I will ignore him. I know longer give a dam what he says about anything. They may be laughing now but that millstone is prepared and waiting.

Bishops who tolerated child molestation, or who ordained homosexual priests, should resign. I don't care if they do penance or not.

LOL - phony theatrics like this will just not do. They must resign and then do penance.

What a show!!!!

That bishop is originally from Washington. He must know plenty about what went on there.

We will continue use to support our local parish church, but will not give another dime to the Bishop’s special fund, nor to Peter’s Pence. Of course we know that a percentage of our local tithe goes to the diocesen Cathedraticum—no option there.
I will NOT allow bad clergy to undermine my faith. As a confessor, now deceased, once said of a local situation: “Priests come and go, but your faith must stay!”

I do not like this at all. Pure theater!

Ann. @11:07– I like that. I have also heard that priests, bishops and popes come and go but Jesus always stays!

Maybe a good public act of reparation is for bishops to wear the house cassock wherever they go. Our bishop wears his a Franciscan habit out on the street as a normal practice.

The best act of reparation that the clergy in the U.S. could do would be the kenosis of celebrating Mass by using the words that Christ has given us through His Body the Church. They think using their own words here and there in the Mass some how improves it. It does not. It in fact deforms it and violates the rights of the assembly to here the Mass as it is given to us.

This submission of their wills to that of Holy Church would do more good than all the public performances that we see here.

Agree with Tom Makin: "Pure theater". Better they say the black and do the red and as suggested, wear their cassocks in public.

The prayers of the mass, save where Scripture is directly quoted, are not of divine inspiration. They are composed by humans using their understanding, literary ability, and theological expertise.

By refusing to donate to Peter's Pence you are withholding assistance from those in dire need.

"The Peter's Pence Collection supports the Pope's philanthropy by giving the Holy Father the means to provide emergency assistance to those in need because of natural disaster, war, oppression, and disease."

Congratulations on being selfish.

“The Peter’s Pence is an offering made to the Pope for the mission of the church (and therefore also to cover the expenses of the Secretariat of State, it is said it makes up at least half of the budget (?)) and until recently it was around 70/80 million US dollars. We are told that said Peter’s Pence comes mainly from the United States, rather then from Germany and Italy.”

“Congratulations on being selfish.”
We give generously to Catholic Social Services locally, emergency relief funds in our state, and several international relief funds.
Do you want to see our checkbook to verify?

Thanks for being judgemental.

Anonymous Kavanaugh,

I see you are back to your old tricks. Just because one doesn't donate to Peter's Pence (I won't either until the clerics at the Vatican involved in the gay sex parties are booted out along with their fellow predator friends there) doesn't mean you can't donate to other charities which are sponsored by organizations that aren't compromised by evil behavior.

Oh, and forgot to mention that we also pay the full Catholic tuition cost for a child whose parents can’t afford it.

What is the standing of the portion within the parentheses? Is the author of the quote stating what he knows to be factual or making an assumption? The "(?))" seems to support the latter...?

Without the support of American Catholics, the Holy See would need a garage sale to keep the Vatican afloat. I have never been so ashamed of my Church as under the pontificate of PF. He even makes Pope Paul VI look like a superstar
