Yes indeed and the moral authority of bishops to include the pope is so compromised that any misstep brings wrath and fury.
I really hate to pile on, but if the quote is accurate (is it ever?) then any apology that contains the word ‘if’ is not an apology.
It will take years to reclaim lost moral authority if, given past events and current administration, that is even possible.
