FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

INTROIT Ps. 85:1, 2-3
Incline Your ear, O Lord, and answer me. Save Your servant who trusts in You. Have pity on me, O Lord, for to You I call all the day.
Ps. 85:4. Gladden the soul of Your servant, for I have lifted up my soul to You, O Lord.
V. Glory be . . .

COLLECT
O Lord, let Your abiding mercy purify and defend the Church. Govern her always by Your care, for without Your assistance she cannot remain safe. Through our Lord . . .

EPISTLE Gal. 5:25-26; 6:1-10
Brethren: If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be made desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. Brethren, and if a man be overtaken in any fault, you, who are spiritual, instruct such a one in the spirit of meekness, considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens: and so you shall fulfill the law of Christ. For if any man think himself to be some thing, whereas he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. But let every one prove his own work: and so he shall have glory in himself only and not in another. For every one shall bear his own burden. And let him that is instructed in the word communicate to him that instructeth him, in all good things. Be not deceived: God is not mocked. For what things a man shall sow, those also shall he reap. For he that soweth in his flesh of the flesh also shall reap corruption. But he that soweth in the spirit of the spirit shall reap life everlasting. And in doing good, let us not fail. For in due time we shall reap, not failing. Therefore, whilst we have time, let us work good to all men, but especially to those who are of the household of the faith.

GRADUAL Ps. 91:2-3
It is good to praise the Lord, and to sing to Your name, O Most high.
V. To proclaim Your mercy in the morning and Your truth throughout the night.

Alleluia, alleluia! V. Ps. 94:3
For the Lord is a great God, and a great king over all the earth. Alleluia!

GOSPEL Luke 7:11-16
At that time, Jesus went into a city that is called Naim: and there went with him his disciples and a great multitude. And when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold a dead man was carried out, the only son of his mother: and she was a widow. And a great multitude of the city was with her. Whom when the Lord had seen, being moved with mercy towards her, he said to her:"Weep not." And he came near and touched the bier. And they that carried it stood still. And he said: "Young man, I say to thee, arise." And he that was dead sat up and begun to speak. And he gave him to his mother. And there came a fear upon them all: and they glorified God saying: "A great prophet is risen up among us: and, God hath visited his people."

OFFERTORY ANTIPHON Ps. 39:2, 3, 4
I have waited and waited for the Lord, and He inclined toward me and heard my cry. And He out a new song into my mouth, a hymn to our God.

SECRET
O Lord, may Your Sacrament safeguard and defend us always against the attacks of the devil. through our Lord . . .

COMMUNION ANTIPHON John 6:52
The Bread that I will give is My flesh for the life of the world.

POSTCOMMUNION
Let the grace of your Heavenly gift rule our minds and bodies, O Lord, that we may overcome the unruly impulses of our nature. Through our Lord . . .

Why don't you celebrate it at the high altar, Father?

The good Lord, in His providence, has preserved the high altar in that beautiful church. There must be reason.

Such beautiful prayers. If we must have Mass in the Vernacular, why can it not be the 1965 MR? The reformed Mass is really the deformed Mass sadly. As good as we can make it, when placed side by side with the Mass of the Ages (in any language) it simply looks like the poor cousin.

Kiwiinamerica, there are two reasons why I don't use the old altar. The first is that from the congregation's view, for me to use the high altar, with the new altar in front of it, all they would see is my shoulders and head, thus eliminating the full impact of the visual of the EF Mass. It just would not look right from the nave of the Church. Certainly it could be done though. But the main reason I don't use it is to fulfill what Pope Benedict desired with the more liberal use of the EF Mass, reform in continuity with our past. Both Masses are two expressions of the one Roman Rite. I think using the same altar for both emphasizes this truth. Now, I were renovating the Church today and my bishop supported my decision in consultation with our pastoral council and their advice, I would have kept the old altar as is and used it for both the EF and OF Masses without new one in front of it. But that really would be radical.

Father, have you considered haiving the EF Mass every Sunday?

Also, thank you for posting the readings/prayers in advance for those of us who can't get a 1962 Missal right now!

If the 2:00 PM Mass had more than 150 attending, I would have considered making the 12:10 PM Mass the EF Mass every Sunday. As it is, we average between 60 and 100 for this Mass a significant number who travel a long way to attend who are not members of St. Joseph. I can't in good conscience change the nature of the 12:10 PM Mass unless more in the parish would like to have the EF Mass every Sunday. On top of that I can't force any parochial vicar to celebrate this form of the Mass if he feels uncomfortable with doing so or simply doesn't want to, so I'm the only one who would be celebrating that Mass.

How do you think we can get more people attending? Some sort of catechesis, among other things? I would seriously be glad to help in any way I can, Father, just let me know what I can do.

Indeed. Perhaps there would be some interest in doing some sort of "event" along the lines of bringing in someone to conduct a class for lack of a better word. I suspect a number of folks are afraid they will be lost and look foolish or disturb those are regulars. There are some excellent DVDs on the Mass, and even speakers from the FSSP who could do workshops, maybe even do a Mass after the workshop as a learning experience.

Alternatively, and perhaps easier and more practical, if a Latin NO Mass can be substituted (as you used to do at MHT in Augusta) for a Vernacular NO, people may become comfortable with the Latin and lower their fears of the EF Mass.

We must remember, the vast majority of the pew sitters have grown up with 40 years of being told a lot of negative and misleading things about the EF, it's not surprising they should be afraid of it.

I would love to see something like what Marc and Templar are talking about. People need to be re-educated about this beautiful and meaningful form of the Mass.

People need tobe educated, not re-educated, about this beautiful EF Mass.

The Mass of my mother, and her father, and his parents, and theri parents...

I got jipped...
I had to wait to unti age 44to hear Latin in the Church of the Latin Rite. I got the chirch of the kumbaya 70's.

Well, mother and grandfather came with me today to the EF Mass, via blessed objects. One of which being a Missal from 1947 that she gave to him. Of course they were with me even without those objects. I do indeed believe in the Communion of Saints, and also sacramentals.

Jipped indeed Anonymous.

The Mass I grew up on failed to keep me in the Church. My parents teaching drove me back to it time and time again, and time and time again I fell away because it was insufficient to hold me. With the release of the EF have I found my Faith again, and ironically enough it was not because I had heard about it and awaited it, but because a Priest was actually railing against it, and that piqued my interest in it enough to find out what he was so upset about.

Jipped indeed. Jipped of our Traditions, our Birth right, and almost our Souls.
