The angel murals behind the main altar where just recently installed. These replace others which were there but removed or painted over in the iconoclastic mid 1960's. Rambusch and Company did extensive plans for the complete iconoclasm of the Cathedral around 1973 or '74. It called for entire removal of the old main altar and reredos and placing the Cathedra there. Then the altar and ambo would have been thrust into the nave's transcept with the altar and ambo both off-centered to show that the Word and the Holy Eucharist are equal, but of course, the central throne for the bishop would be the most important! All the murals would have been whitewashed so as not to distract from the bishop's throne....
There was a rebellion in the diocese and evidently death threats to the then bishop and all of this was shelved and I'm not sure the bishop ever truly recovered from the pastoral debacle.

You Southernors are tougher than we Yankees. We just rolled over for wreckovations by the cultural philistines (liberals)up North!
But roll over for rampant heresies as everyone is afraid of Man, but not the judgement of God.
I saw them Sunday at the TLM mass and I don’t think much of them. As they distract from the main alter.
