COMPARED TO THE GERMAN BISHOPS (NOT ALL OF THEM OF COURSE) FATHER ALTMAN IS SMALL POTATOES WHEN IT COMES TO BEING CONCERNED ABOUT DISOBEDIENT CLERGY IN THE CHURCH!

How is it that these Germans are getting away with this?

Archbishop Aquila: Germany’s Synodal Path Needs Repentance, Belief, Truth

In a 15-page commentary on the fundamental text produced by the first forum of the German Catholic Synodal Path, Archbishop Aquila warned that the first basic text offers “selective and misleading” interpretations of Church teaching.

Archbishop Aquila reflected in his open letter dated May 13, the feast of the Ascension, and released May 26, the feast of St. Philip Neri.

In a Church that desperately needs more Aquilas and Burkes, we appear doomed to indefinitely get more Cupiches and McElroys.

Mediocrity, thy name is "Church of the New Advent"!

Tom Marcus,

So true. Cupich is not very bright and never would have been a cardinal except in the age of the “empty cassock.”

Seriously, I mean SERIOUSLY???
Altman said “the Jews had it coming to them” among other highly offensive comments and factually inaccurate statements (lies), as well as being in breach of canon law regarding party political involvement - yet the Germans are worse.
Unbelievable!!!

Altman should have had his faculties suspended, not just loosing his parish appointment- he’s got off extremely lightly under the circumstances.

UK Priest:

This is the first I have heard of any anti-semitic comments from Fr. Altman. However, I cannot find them. Do you have a link to a site that verifies your statement? Thank you.

Perhaps UK priest heard Father proclaiming a passage from the Gospel of John? At any rate, what the German bishops (not all of them) are doing is creating not only a schism with Rome but an apostasy. And they have a far flung effect on the entire world which Father Altman does not.

I just hope the Holy Father has a plan concerning the apostate bishops because his silence thus far is enabling the worst possible outcome.

UK - Priest,

There are some in the left-wing of the Democratic Party in the US that say the same things, including President Obama's former pastor in Chicago.

UK-Priest said...

Pierre - President Obama’s ex preacher is not a serving priest within the Catholic Church supposedly representing official teaching - so it’s not relevant. Total whataboutism! I guess Fr Alt-right has never read Nostra aetate.

Anon 8:02 - it’s in a recent sermon published on his parish website but try Googling and you will find the highly offensive garbage he’s been peddling reported in the credible catholic press eg America mag etc.

Fr McD - absolute rubbish - there is not even a close equivalence, and you’re a moral imbecile if you believe otherwise. You should be outright condemning anti-Semitic nonsense like this, not making excuses for it.

From the Tablet (Letter from Rome by Christopher Lamb)...

According to Cardinal Braz de Aviz, the Brazilian cardinal who leads the Holy See’s congregation for Religious, the Pope is concerned about priestly formation, “including the tendency to go a bit far from the Second Vatican Council” and the “retaking of traditionalist positions”. The issue affects who is admitted to seminaries, and the formation of the clergy before and after ordination. It is not primarily a question of a seminarian or a priest’s liturgical preferences, but whether they might seek to impose an ideologically driven vision of the Church in their parish. That results in division and difficulty.

Then there is so-called “Rad Trad” Catholicism, on the rise in the US. At the extreme end, it is represented by priests such as Fr James Altman, from La Crosse diocese, Wisconsin. He believes practising Catholics cannot be Democrats, describes climate change as a hoax, has defied local ordinances about Covid safety, and asserts that women can’t preach because they’re only concerned with questions such as “Does this dress make me look fat?”, whereas men want truth and straight answers. His bishop has recently asked him to resign from his parish, but Fr Altman is resisting.

Questions of formation are clearly on the Pope’s mind, particularly the issue of extreme rigidity. Addressing the Italian bishops on Monday, Francis said: “We frequently saw seminarians who seemed good but rigid. And rigidity is not of the good spirit … There were big problems behind that rigidity.”

I’d like to see Fr Alt-right’s seminary records - I’m sure they’d be very interesting reading!
Someone probably ordained this fool against serious concerns around his suitability.
This guy seriously needs a psychiatric evaluation, he’s nuts or personality disordered!

Fr McD,
Hmmm, who was it that said the rumour mongers pushing the idea that Germans were going to cause a schism was pure hysteria and the risk came from extremists within the American Church - oh yeah, it was Cardinal Oulet (hardly a progressive himself)!

UK - Priest,

At least this traditional priest believes what the Church teaches. You sound very judgmental, ergo, a typical liberal. Why don't you practice what you preach?

Most of the bile in the US comes from the left side of the aisle, which includes Obama and his preacher.

UK-Priest said...

No he doesn’t teach what the Church believes cf Nostra aetate and teaching around Jews.
In fact Fr Alt-right teaches the opposite of what the Church believes and the authentic magisterium.

I’m making a judgement based on an objective assessment of the facts - there’s a difference.

The German bishops are a far, far, far greater threat to the Church and her unity and live in a country where anti Semittism allowed the extermination of the Jews. These Germans are the dangerous ones, not Fr. Altman who is small potatoes and a small distraction.

UK - Priest,

Please confirm your belief in Transubstantiation

UK Priest,

I am sure Fr Altman strongly believes in almost 99% in Vatican 2 documents, ie- that which is in line with all past councils since Nicaea as I am fairly sure he has a stronger belief in the Nicene Creed than the majority of liberal, “progressive” clergy.... If Fr Altman or anyone was to regard some parts of Nostra Aetate etc (statements of a pastoral council) as either ambiguous or problematic he would not be alone...

Fr Altman like all of us has his flaws, but at least he does not come across as “camp as a row of tents” and nor does he dress in public like a cast member of La Cage Aux Folles...

Surely that is something?

God bless,
Monica A.

UK Berk, sorry, UK Priest,

Please confirm your belief (or disbelief which would = delusional denial) of HUNDREDS of homosexual and heterodox clergy (Catholic and Anglican and Episcopalian etc) running rampant in the UK, the USA and Western Europe, Australia and NZ and so on, for about the past 50 years with the hierarchy, for the most part, barely batting an eyelid?

You label Fr Altman as Fr Alt-right, what would be a good nickname for the above type of priest?

We were blessed, for over a decade, with 4 Catholic priests, based at our cathedral, who earned the nicknames of “The Spice Girls”...

Could you with your brilliant, cutting wit come up with a better label than that?

Yours,
Australian seminarian - and, formerly, a London based journalist.

PS - and to ask a stupid question, which perhaps you are qualified to answer, I wonder, in our times, what type of clergyman did the most damage to Christianity in general, and the Catholic Church in particular, the type of priest you label Fr Alt-right or a Fr Ginger Spice type, who after 2 decades or so running amok leaves the priesthood to enter into a civil marriage with his boyfriend ?

The term "transubstantiation" is like kryptonite or a cross to a vampire to priests like UK - Priest

Pierre - you forgot to add “in your opinion” because that is all that comment is, your subjective opinion, not a substantiated fact!

For the record, I have no difficulty with Transubstantiation.
