What do President Joe Biden and ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick share in common? According to the organizer of a recent conference on Biden's Catholicism, the two men have been "abandoned" by the church's pastors for not having been barred from Communion.

The Vatican's McCarrick report, which chronicled his decades of abuse of minors and seminarians and was released last fall, illustrates "what happens when the church fails to be church by preferring instead to be, as a practical matter, to be a bureaucracy," said Villanova University professor of law Patrick McKinley Brennan on April 23.

"What McCarrick needed was callously denied," he said, going on to argue by comparison that Biden's support for legal abortion demands that "the church's pastors ... show the truth" and deny the president Communion.

"...church by preferring instead to be, as a practical matter, to be a bureaucracy."

I think this misses the more serious failing, that too many bishops of the Church tend to love, as in Germanic lands, the money that supports their bureaucracy. When so many catholics agree with Mr. Biden's position, another failing of the bishops as teachers, denying Mr Biden communion would alienate these, further reducing income for the dioceses. McCarrick was an important coffer filler for the Church, until it became impossible to keep his antics secret anymore. As was said some time ago, and as this article implies, the problem with the Church is with its bishops, something that is still much ignored today.

Personally, I don’t think that President Biden should be formally excommunicated. However, a censure should be placed against him from receiving Holy Communion due to his public rhetoric on human sexuality, contraception and abortion which are not Catholic. Commend him for what he does right in terms of Catholic Social Teachings but warn him not to receive Holy Communion until he repents or is out of office.

He must be treated in a different matter than a normal lay person in the Church. He is leading Catholics to believe they can hold public positions contrary to the Laws of God and be in good standing with the Church.

The bishops are responsible for this mess. But we have a central authority in the pope who could easily set things into motion.

Pope Francis setting things in motion? LOL - as long as Biden is for Global Warming and illegal aliens, the Pope will do nothing

Br McD:
The problem with the popes, and the article even mentions JPII and B16, is that popes are also political leaders, of the Vatican state. In other words, they are not meant to do things today that would be taken as insulting other political leaders in the world. Oddly, that rarely stopped the popes in previous eras, Henry VIII as example.

Just keep it simple (censure) and say his abortion stance is unacceptable. Someone pro-choice on that is likely to be liberal on the other issues anyway (gender, fetal tissue research, contraception). You are not likely either to find Catholics who oppose abortion also supportive of gay marriage. Biden might have more credibility if he at least supported the Hyde Amendment and opposed late-term abortions and funding of abortions overseas thru so-called "family planning" services. Granted, until Roe is overturned (as of course it should be---one of the worst decisions in Supreme Court history, and one does not have to be particularly religious to believe that---saying it is "made-up" law is enough!), there isn't much that can be done politically to restrict abortion, at least not at the national level (LOL getting 60 votes in the Senate to overcome a Democratic filibuster on even minimal abortion restrictions).

Deny him a Catholic burial as well. Senator Oldsmobile Kennedy was given a huge one at the Cathedral with the Cardinal in attendance - a total disgrace

In 2009 A.D., Pope Benedict XVI declared that climate change is real.

He declared that environmental issues...the manner in which we have polluted the earth, deforestation, "the pollution of rivers,"...have a direct impact on the right-to-life issue.

He insisted that world peace is impossible as long as we pollute the earth, as well as plunder natural resources.

Pope Benedict XVI insisted that to remain indifferent to refugees, "environmental refugees," impacts profoundly society's attitude toward the right to life.

Pope Benedict declared:

"Can we disregard the growing phenomenon of “environmental refugees”, people who are forced by the degradation of their natural habitat to forsake it – and often their possessions as well – in order to face the dangers and uncertainties of forced displacement?

"All these are issues with a profound impact on the exercise of human rights, such as the right to life, food, health and development."

=======================================================================================

President Biden is on board with Pope Benedict XVI'S — the "Green Pope" — teachings in respect to the environment...the evil of pollution...plundering earth's resources.

However, President Biden does not take the obvious next step.

That is, to link climate change, environmentalism, "environmental refugees," — the care of earth, as well as human creation, entrusted to us as God's good stewards — to the overall right-to-life issue.

As Pope Benedict XVI taught, our responsibility to care for the environment is linked to our responsibility to advance the right-to-life cause.

President Biden has protected ponds, and streams, from pollution — that is a good thing.

However, it is beyond tat as a Catholic, President Biden has refused to protect unborn babies from the tools of death wielded by abortionists.

Pax.

Sophia here: Hi Father. What exactly has the Biden/Harris/Obama/Pelosi/Schumer administration done right in terms of Catholic Social Teachings? I guess so much that is anti-Catholic Teaching, anti-Christian, anti-Biblical, anti-Natural Law, anti-this Constitutional Republic has come out of this administration that I may have missed examples of those.

And add others to the list---Nancy Pelosi, Ed Markey and Kristen Gillibrand come to mind. Parise to the bishop of Springfield for telling Illinois' Dick Durbin to stay away from communion until he recants,

Anonymous at 10:28 PM,

At one time Durbin was pro life but then learned he could not rise in the Party of Intrinsic Evil unless he began to worship abortion as a sacrament
