Pope Francis can be capricious and contradictory. He does not always choose his words carefully and even when he knows he is being misinterpreted, he never issues clarifications.
But nothing he has said about 'gay' people implies approval of homosexual genital activity. And why does the NCR assume that a 'loving relationship' has to involve sex?
The editorial in question is flawed beyond belief.
The editorial stated: "Although gay unions can have "positive elements," the Vatican determined, they are "not ordered to the Creator's plan." God, said the doctrinal office, "does not and cannot bless sin."
"Forgive us if we have whiplash. Pope Francis approved this?"
The editorial then listed a few examples as to Pope Francis' charitable statements and actions in regard to homosexuals.
Example: "The same man who has met with LGBT couples throughout his papacy, including during his visit to the U.S. in 2015?"
The editorial then acknowledged: "We recognize, of course, that the earlier papal quips and meetings did not ultimately change the church's teaching on human sexuality."

Pope Francis' charitable outreach, in line with Church teaching, to homosexuals, "did not ultimately change the church's teaching on human sexuality."
Nevertheless, we are expected to believe that Pope Francis' has failed and misled homosexuals.
We are expected to believe that homosexuals are stunned and disappointed suddenly in that Pope Francis has rejected the legitimacy of same-sex unions.
As the homosexual lobby has known from his days in Argentina to date, Pope Francis has rejected the legitimacy of same-sex unions.
Then why the sudden uproar from the homosexual lobby?
The reason is simple.
As the NCR editorial declared:
"We recognize, of course, that the earlier papal quips and meetings did not ultimately change the church's teaching on human sexuality.
"That will take many years and will likely require the kind of open-ended, "no topic off the table" synodal process Francis has spoken so elegantly of throughout his papacy."
That is at root of the venom spewed at Pope Francis.
The homosexual lobby desires that Holy Mother Church change Her teachings in regard to human sexuality.
Translation: In the case at hand, the homosexual lobby desired that Pope Francis grant approval to the sin of the Sodomites.
The homosexual lobby has desired that Pope Francis, a son of Holy Mother Church, our holy and great Culture of Life Pope, would throw in with Satan.
That is why the homosexual lobby has just attacked Pope Francis.
