Everyone thought that Pope Benedict would polarize the Church and bring about another schism but His Holiness did none of that--His Holiness healed the wounds of division precisely through His Holiness' clear thinking and desire to propose and not impose upon the Church. He would never have proposed heretical or near heretical ideologies though! His proposals were always orthodox and not heterodox!
Thus we have this kind of spectacle happening within the Catholic Hierarchy and the blame must be laid at imposing questionable teachings and pastoral practices as though these are doctrines or dogmas.

the family, Amoris Laetitia, German Cardinal Walter Brandmuller said
that if adultery was "always and under all circumstances morally
reprehensible," then to say that adultery is okay today under certain
circumstances is "heresy" and leads to "schism" in the Church. Cardinal

I hear that 40 to 70 cardinals agree privately with Card. Brandmuller, but are "intimidated" (meaning rendered gutless?) by the current climate of fear in Rome.
