THE DEFORMATION OF THE ROMAN MASS, EVEN IF THE 1970 ROMAN MISSAL HAD NEVER BEEN MANUFACTURED, WOULD HAVE OCCURRED EVEN WITH THE 1962 ROMAN MISSAL AND ITS VATICAN II SLIGHT REVISIONS WITH THE 1966 ROMAN MISSAL AND THIS IS PROOF!

This is a scene from Elvis Presley’s movie, “A Change of Habits” which was filmed, more than likely, around 1966 or 67. The repetitive scenes of the Offertory Rite, and out of order, due to the editing of the film, is from the 1962 slightly revised Missal of this transitional period.

The 1965/66 Roman Missal had slight alterations to the 1962 Missal and mostly rubrical changes, many of them quite good, others questionable. The offertory procession was an option as seen in the video, but it is still the Tridentine Offertory and the 1966 Missal still had it in quiet Latin. The Roman Canon is exclusively used with the only rubrical change with the “Per Ipsum”.

More than like, if you are my age, you will recall that during this transitional period prior to the 1970 Missal, the Low Mass became the norm, so that four folk hymns with guitar could be sung at the procession, offertory, Communion and Recession. Nothing else was sung, as the actual spoken Mass was easier for people to actively say. Thus the Propers were said by the priest and in English in this Missal.

The other beneficial reform of the 1962 Missal was that the priest did not need to recite the propers and other parts of the Mass if it was sung. Thus, if the schola chanted in Gregorian Chant the propers, the priest need not also say this in Latin, the schola and/or congregation’s responses or singing or saying were sufficient. That was good and I think it should also be applied to the way the 1962 Roman Missal is sung today.

But my point in showing this video is that this could well have been a 1962 Roman Missal Mass with no offertory procession but the same type of music in the four hymn club sandwich:

Precisely. The Issue is not the Missal but Vatican Council II, interpreted rationally or irrationally. The Council here is interpreted rrationally and so all this Elvis Presley innovation is possible. The Church is saying here that outswide the Church there is salvation. So since there is salvation outside the Church faith and morals in the Catholic Church are not the only way to God to Heaven. It does not only have to be the Latin Mass.- Lionel Andrades

I saw this movie, Change of Habit, with Mary Tyler Moore and Elvis. Miss Moore went to an IHM high school before the order went berserk.

By this time most altars had been turned for versus populum celebration yet Hollywood opted for ad orientem. Interesting that Hollywood has a better sense of the sacred than our bishops.

Father McDonald,

The release date for the movie was November 10, 1969! So Hollywood stuck with the tried and true eschewing Brand X!

I remember this and wasn’t sure if it was legit or even really Catholic. I grew up in Tennessee and was over-exposed to Elvis such I was not a fan, so the guitar Mass still gives me a rash, although I have become more understanding, if not actually tolerant.

Couldn't one argue that secular influences that have historically enhanced and shaped the Church have done so because they reflect back to us something of God and has thus been, in some manner blessed by their application to the Church?

I am certainly no expert on art or architecture, but the symmetry and order of the pre-Christian Roman basilica tends to reflect the order and symmetry of God's creation, while brutalist architecture tends to reflect the coldness and alienation of the modern world. When Latin was codified into the liturgy, there probably WAS nothing special about it, but over time, Latin has become an essentially dead language, which has made it perfect for our Church, because dead languages do not change or evolve and the meanings of its words remain constant.

Kwasniewsky makes some strong points, but I fear that the people who need to hear what he shares either are not interested, would never take the time to listen or, if forced to listen would defiantly stick their fingers in their ears.

I happen to agree that the societal collapse of the 60's was so overarching and so overpowering that Catholics would not have been immune to it, even if there had been no liturgical changes. BUT, would as many Catholics been seduced by the world, the flesh and the devil if such changes did not occur? Sadly, we will never know the answer.

What we DO know is that the Church has, even during the 60's and 70's, been seen as a bulwark against every degenerate trend in societal culture. But with the exposure of so many homosexual priests not practicing what they preached (or demonstrating WHY they didn't preach it) , and with so many "aggiornamento" types of priests quietly giving people advice contrary to the faith, the Church has now lost much of that credibility. It is further exacerbated by a pope using Peronist tactics to tell us contradictory explanations, at one moment embracing the "spirit" speaking through the voices of apostate laity, then later telling some bishops and priests, "no you can't--not yet". And it is that "yet" that should scare the daylights out of us. A Church that speaks out of both sides of its mouth is just another denomination insisting it is "Christian" while allowing the faithful (or faithless) to do whatever they want.

We can also observe that there is only one sector in our western culture where we see growth and witness young people returning to Mass and that is in the embrace of Tradition.

That HAS to tell us something.

Jerome Merwick,

I grew up and was trained in the pre-Conciliar Church which was admired and respected by millions - even Hollywood bent the knee and produced movies highly flattering of the Catholic Church. I am unaware of other faiths getting this sort of treatment - there may have been but I simply don’t recall.

The pre-Conciliar Church was a bulwark against Modernism, Communism, Fascism and Nazism, although you might not believe that based on crackpot revisionist history which is lapped up by leftists in the Church. The Church, as She was on the eve of the Council, attracting millions of converts in part because She was a bulwark and seemingly unchanging Faith, but that was all thrown away by a top down revolution in the Church. The hierarchy could not grasp that ordinary folks were attracted by Her constancy. Instead of millions converting, we now have millions leaving. People thirst for authenticity not gimmickry. The Synod on Synods is just another cheap gimmick.

I am one of those who believe if we had not radically reformed the Liturgy and Religious life, the Church would be in a better place today. She is recovering through clergy, religious and laity who embrace the traditions of our Faith. Liberalism is a spent force in Catholicism. It has failed on a breathtaking scale.

The SSPX Mass is valid and it is the popes who are in heresy and schism when they support Vatican Council II interpreted irrationally and not rationally.

The SSPX must insist that Cardinal Ladaria interpret Vatican Council II rationally and then ask all Catholic religious communities to do the same.

The SSPX bishops and Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre were correct when they rejected Vatican Council II interpreted irrationally, producing liberalism, schism and first class heresy in the Church. This remains a public scandal for the popes, cardinals and bishops.

No pope, cardinal and bishop can violate the Principle of Non Contradiction of Aristotle or the Laws of Physics at the Newtonian level of matter. This was done by the popes since Pius XII.

It is confirmed by the Italian physicist and former Rector and Dean of Theology of the University of St. Anselm, Rome. He has said that there are no physically visible cases of non Catholics being saved on earth, with the baptism of desire or in invincible ignorance.

Being saved with the baptism of desire or in invincible ignorance are "zero cases" in our reality said the apologist John Martignoni. So BOD and I.I are not practical exceptions for the dogma extra eccledsiam nulla salus (EENS) said Archbishop Thomas E. Gullickson, the former U.S Nuncio for Switzerland and Leichenstein. So it is the popes, cardinals and bishops who must first interpret Vatican Council II rationally in harmony with Tradition. Then they can expect the Society of St. Pius X and the sedevacantists CMRI, MHT, MHFM etc, to also interpret Vatican Council II honestly, rationally and traditionally.

Now the popes, cardinals and bishops are unethical in their interpretation of the Council and should not expect everyone in the Church to be dishonest too.

They cannot expect the SSPX Mass to be ‘licit’ only when the SSPX accepts and interprets Vatican Council II dishonestly.

The SSPX is doing the correct thing in rejecting Vatican Council II irrational, even though it is licit for the pope. The popes, cardinals and bshops, must now affirm Vatican Council II rational, in public.Traditionis Custode has a big question mark, since it promoted Vatican Council II interpreted irrationally and not rationally.

Pope Francis has had a meeting with the Superior of the SSPX and Cardinal Ladaria has said that the SSPX are not in schism and are a part of the Church. However the dialogue with them continues.

The Principle of Non Contradiction also applies to a pope. They too must follow Newton's Laws of Physics

The SSPX Mass is valid. It will be licit when Pope Francis accepts Vatican Council II (rational) and so comes back to Tradition. The SSPX then can easily accept a traditional Council. The responsibility lies with the pope. He must accept Vatican Council II (rational). He must not tell the SSPX that their Mass will be licit only when they accept Vatican Council II interpreted irrationally. Cardinal Luiz Ladaris sj must not interpret Vatican Council II politically and then dialogue with the SSPX for them to do the same.

The cardinals and bishops in general are interpreting Vatican Council II irrationally and politically and so their Mass is licit for the pope and the Left.

But with Vatican Council II (irrational) they are contradicting the Creeds and Catechisms producing heresy and schism and this is ‘licit’? This is also a mortal sin of faith. It is a public, manifest mortal sin of faith, which is licit for the pope.

The SSPX is doing the correct thing by rejecting Vatican Council II interpreted irrationally by Pope Francis. Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre was correct. The Council interpreted irrationally, to produce a fake break with Tradition, should be rejected by all Catholics.

However Pope Francis and the SSPX must accept and interpret Vatican Council II rationally. This is possible. Then Pope Francis becomes conservative on Vatican Council II. The Council can no more support a development of doctrine; it will not be there in the text of the Council. The liberalism in the Church ends.

Theology will once again say outside the Church there is no known salvation. Since there are no practical exceptions for traditional exclusive salvation in the Catholic Church.None that can be seen and none mentioned in the text of Vatican Council II. ‘Rome will have returned to the Faith’ as sought by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. Liberalism will no more be a choice. The pope can no more justify Traditionis Custode with Vatican Council II (irrational). Since the Council will only support the ecclesiology of the pre-1962 Missal. The Council will be licit. It will be ethical. Now it is dishonest. It is valid for the pope and also licit but the interpretation is based upon deception which is politically correct, since the time of Pope Paul VI.

The Dominican Mass, for example, at the University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) Rome, is valid and the interpretation of Vatican Council II is licit, but it is also dishonest. It is a moral issue. It is unethical. The Dominicans are teaching a new ecclesiology based upon the irrational interpretation of the Council. The Novus Ordo and Latin Mass are valid and licit but with the false interpretation of Vatican Council II, they become heretical and schismatic, in their theology.

The Council interpreted with the Fake Premise and Inference produces heresy and schism, even at the Latin Mass.- Lionel Andrades
