The recent report detailing the Vatican’s response to the scandal surrounding ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick shows why it’s a mistake to canonize popes (or anyone) quickly after their deaths.
First of all, I'd rather see us spend more time learning and spreading StJPII's considerable contributions to Catholic moral theology than quickly developing his cult.
Second of all, it seems to me that the effectiveness of Catholic evangelization will depended upon the example provided by prominent Catholics. A failure of example will be a failure of evangelization. Most Catholics presume a sort of integralist transmission of the Faith, in which merely being born into a Catholic family is sufficient to ensure another generation of Catholics. But the only way Catholicism will survive in the West is if laymen seek converts. This obligation is greatest on the greatest lay Catholics.
Father I’ve said it before that none of the Vatican II popes should have been canonized. Pope Pius X was the last true saintly Pope and in my humble opinion the last Pope not influenced by Masonic forces starting with Benedict the XV who suppressed Fatima and Padre Pio then going to Pius XI and XII.
