At least the left wing paper called by some “fish wrap” but I call “Chismatic” so I can refer to it the way most do, NCR, acknowledges that it was and is a scandal that the McCarrick character, as corrupt as he is, was allowed to climb the latter to that of cardinal.
No 1970’s type and this includes those my age and older in the hierarchy, living or dead, can escape the mentality that allowed a person of this type to rise. When you look at the horrible track record of bishops and the way they managed sexually abusive priests, we see highly compromised, negligent and down right non-human attitudes about corrupt, disordered and down right perverted sexual behavior. Never mind if they were/are Catholic or not, where they human or not?
Here are several revealing articles in this morning’s NCR but we can only hope the Vatican Report to be released this week won’t be a continuation of fake Catholicism and will name the names and be frank about it:

In the third article, "The McCarrick report: A roster of likely figures, there is then a section on American cardinals. One name missing, who would have worked behind the scenes, is Cardinal James Harvey. He worked in the Secretariat of State and then was Prefect of the Papal Household. He protected Archbishop Rembert Weakland from criticism and negative letters for almost 25 years. Weakland and his auxiliary, Bishop Richard Sklba should also be defrocked.
There are others, but lets stop there for now.
