DON’T PUT YOUR DANG CHRISTMAS TREE UP BEFORE DECEMBER 16 AND DON’T TAKE DOWN YOUR DANG CHRISTMAS TREE OR SACRED CRÈCHES UNTIL FEBRUARY 2! GOT IT?????

I saw this photo on Facebook:

Yes, because of Covid-19 depression, the retail season and Lifetime and other media’s playing of Christmas music, Christmas movies and people are encouraged to put up their Christmas decorations early in November if not in October. What bunk! It’s a dang shame!

I have a novel idea that bucks this dictatorship:

PUT YOUR CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS UP GRADUALLY DURING ADVENT, WAITING TO PUT YOUR TREE UP UNTIL THE VIGIL OF THE “O ANTIPHONS” WHICH WOULD BE SEVEN DAYS BEFORE THE CHRISTMAS VIGIL, DECEMBER 16.

AND EVEN MORE NOVEL, EXCEPT FOR UBER TRADITIONAL CATHOLICS, KEEP YOUR DECORATIONS UP UNTIL THE TRADITIONAL DATE OF EPIPHANY, JANUARY 6TH AND THEN ONLY GRADUALLY TAKE THEM DOWN COMPLETING THAT TRANSITION BY FEBRUARY 2ND, THE FEAST OF THE PURIFICATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY/THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD IN THE TEMPLE/CANDLEMAS.

HOW GOOD WOULD THAT BE?

I have noticed a lot of people that would not have otherwise put up “Christmas” decorations have begun doing it now. I am putting up lights and some decorations that will not be lighted before the season because the ice, wind, and snow are too much to bear. But there are some that I sense are spiritually poor and sense, rightly, the hope and long for the Light that Christmas brings. So I think this is a signal that I should send an invitation to overcome our isolation with the true closeness of prayer.

Normally I would agree with you, Father. But this year, a year of abnormal, sometimes horrible suffering, I am for whatever can foster a bit of hope and maybe even a little joy? My family has experienced incredible pain, illness and loss this yea. If they had wanted to put up a tree in August I’d have welcomed it—but they were too sick to do so and may not even be able to do so by December 16. This might be a good opportunity to practice charity and defer judgement.

Sophia here: Anonymous @ 11:10 PM. Your circumstances sound overwhelming and demoralizing. May St. Luke the "great and Glorious" physician intercede on behalf of you and your family that the Greatest Physician of all, Jesus Himself, gives you a measure of spiritual if not physical healing and much comfort during, and courage for, the journey ahead.

Will continue to pray for all of you!

And please, no Christmas music in the stores right now, like I experienced at the Fresh Market in Buckhead last night! That is, the Buckhead area of Atlanta, not the hamlet of Buckhead along I-20 in Morgan County, between Atlanta and Augusta.

Sophia, thanks so much! Prayer makes all the difference.. we have been praying to St. Jude, but I am so grateful for your prayers to St Luke!
Bless you in this Advent season ...

At my traditional parish we all follow what Catholics have always done. We observe advent and on Christmas eve the family decorates the house and tree. Try it. the family really looks forward to Christmas, they love it. Doing penance for 4 weeks really makes you enjoy Christmas . Be counter cultural !!!!.

"...what Catholics have always done."

Funny, since the tradition of an indoor Christmas tree didn't start untill the 1500's. One wonder how "traditional" Catholics have "always done" what wasn't "always done" for 1500 years.
