Father Z relates a story concerning a priest at an EF Mass. For whatever reason, Fr. Z says he was distracted, the priest during an EF Mass, forgot to consecrate the wine. He only consecrated the Host.
Thus after the consecration of the Host and the double genuflection, the priest continued with the ret of the canon and Mass. He received the consecrated Host and drank the wine, which was only wine,
This is what Fr. Z writes:
However, if he did not consecrate both species, that means that he did not consume both species. If he did not consume both, the it wasn’t Mass. For the Sacrifice of Calvary to be renewed, you have to have the two-fold consecration and then the priest must consume them both. That didn’t happen in this case, so Mass was not celebrated.
But the Host was consecrated, no? Can that be if no Mass was celebrated???????????????
At the moment that the Host was consecrated, the priest genuflected in adoration/worship, elevated the Host for all to do the same and then genuflected again. The bread became the Bread of Life: Jesus Christ, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. Can that happen if “Mass was not celebrated?”
It is quite common at most EF Masses for the congregation to receive Hosts consecrated at another Mass, meaning they receive from the ciborium in the tabernacle. But let’s say at this Mass, the priest consecrated hosts in the ciborium for the congregation at the time he consecrated his Host. Were those Hosts consecrated or not since he forgot to consecrated the Precious Blood and thus “Mass was not celebrated”?
Would Ecclesia Supplet supply what is lacking in this unintentional mistake by the priest? Would in fact the Mass be a Mass and all is kosher?
Or can a priest go into a bakery and consecrated all the bread there since a valid Mass isn’t needed for a partial consecration even outside of Mass?
