He spoke "truth to power" so "progressives" should be rallying around him. FYI, this judge is a nasty piece of work. She tried to get Father Nolan removed as chaplain of one of the local legal societies. It's all about her.
TJM is very accurate. My sister lives in this diocese and this priest has great courage in doing this. Note the following: Fr Stephen was very respectful and private in his actions. The judge has decided to make this a "federal case". She is wrong, he is right. His Bishop supports him and the faithful need more of this unapologetic action. My sister is conflicted on this in saying that the judge has done a lot for the community.....This doesn't matter, nor does the fact that she donated $7K to the church. She cannot buy her way into eternal communion with the one true church. She is currently not in communion and needs to publicly and privately repent before she can receive communion again. Any dialogue to the opposite is wrong and any priest who now, given the public stance she has taken, continues to offer her communion, is wrong and should be reprimanded by his Bishop. This new generation of priests are our only hope. The old guard, clinging to the NO (Fr McDonald is an exception :)) needs to retire and go away quickly.
Here's an update. It is very telling about the depth of her "catholic" faith. Just another Vatican Disaster II "success" story:
"This story has now thudded into a hardly surprising new phase. HERE She went to a Methodist “inclusion” gathering and tool their “communion”.
I like the bit in the video where she says, “It’s not about me.”
ROFL!
You can tell a lot about what this woman understands about the Faith she said she belonged it. In fact, she belongs to another religion altogether. And note the video of her taking Methodist “communion”.
I appreciate that Father Nolan noted that Judge Smolenski is in opposition to Pope Francis' teachings on the family.
That has signified that Judge Smolenski has opposed Pope Francis' Magisterium...rather than having opposed Father Nolan
The judge practices "recognize but resist" "Catholicism." She assists at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. She declares at Mass, via her "amen" to the commemoration of Pope Francis, that His Holiness is the orthodox Roman Pontiff.
However, the judge announced during the news story that tries to be Jesus Christ's faithful servant.
That is impossible as he who hears Pope Francis hears Jesus Christ.
Therefore, via her opposition to Pope Francis' authority to teach, govern, and sanctify her, the judge has opposed Jesus Christ.
That said, we must pray for the judge. She has shaken her fist at God via her opposition to Pope Francis' Magisterium. Nevertheless, we must treat the judge in dignified, merciful fashion. Father Nolan has done that.
Judge Smolenski, should she open her heart and mind to Pope Francis' Magisterium, will find in Holy Mother Church a merciful mother who will accompany her (Judge Smolenski) to the Truth.
However, Judge Smolenski must cast aside her "recognize but resist" approach.
Father Nolan is wise to have announced that Judge Smolenski has stood in opposition to Pope Francis. By his having done so, Father Nolan made it clear that the story is not about him.
Rather, the story is about Judge Smolenski's "recognize but resist" mutiny against the Vicar of Christ, Pope Francis.
Judge Smolenski has rejected Pope Francis' teaching on marriage as expressed, for example, via Amoris Laetitia.
Amoris Laetitia, #251:
"In discussing the dignity and mission of the family, the Synod Fathers observed that, “as for proposals to place unions between homosexual persons on the same level as marriage, there are absolutely no grounds for considering homosexual unions to be in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God’s plan for marriage and family”.
Mark Thomas said..."The judge practices 'recognize but resist Catholicism.' She assists at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. She declares at Mass, via her 'amen' to the commemoration of Pope Francis, that His Holiness is the orthodox Roman Pontiff."
Her practice of Catholicism is no different from Hans Kung's practice of Catholicism and Robert Drinan SJ's practice of Catholicism, and you have stated that both of those people are/were "orthodox Catholics in communion with the pope."
Neither one of them have been excommunicated, and neither has this judge.
You don't have the authority to excommunicate the judge, and neither the pope, nor her bishop, have done so.
Therefore, according to you, if she is not excommunicated, she is in communion with Pope Francis and is, by reason of that fact, "orthodox."
Just like Hans Kung and Father Drinan, which you maintain are/were both orthodox.
While bloggers on this blog disagree on liturgical matters, hopefully there is not a one of us (who blogs on this site) who thinks marriage can be anything but one man and one woman. If anyone does, then they have really gone off the tracks...of course it was the U.S. Supreme Court which "redefined" marriage a few years ago, based on? Well, made-up law, or the Constitution being a "living, breathing document" which "evolves (?) with the times."
"Her practice of Catholicism is no different from Hans Kung's practice of Catholicism and Robert Drinan SJ's practice of Catholicism, and you have stated that both of those people are/were "orthodox Catholics in communion with the pope."
"Neither one of them have been excommunicated, and neither has this judge.

As I noted correctly two years ago (or so) in regard to our discussions about Fathers Küng and Drinan, their respective dioceses (bishops) had made it clear that each priest in question is (or was in Father Drinan's case, as he has fallen asleep in the Lord) remained in good standing with the Church.
Neither priest was prohibited by his diocese from having received/distributed Holy Communion.
Conversely, Father Nolan has made it clear that Sara Smolenski has defied Pope Francis' Magisterium.
Sara Smolenski has refused to submit to Pope Francis' God-given authority to teach, govern, and sanctify her.
In turn, the Diocese of Grand Rapids (bishop) has supported Father Nolan's determination in question.
Again, Fathers Küng's and Drinan's respective dioceses affirmed that said priests were in good standing with the Church...free to receive/distribute Holy Communion.
DJR, nice bait and switch. Nevertheless, I will respond happily in detail to your post.
For now, did you apologize to me (not that I asked for one) for having labeled me a liar a few weeks ago?
As you may recall, you claimed that His Holiness Pope Francis had admitted that the Our Lady of the Amazon icon/statue was indeed the pagan idol "pachamama."
Therefore, you insisted that I was wrong about the supposed "pagan idol"...that I had lied about the pachamama story.
DJR, Pope Francis did not...did not...identify the icon as "pachamama."
Pope Francis, in fact, Via his official statement, as well as an official Vatican press statement that accompanied the Holy Father's statement in question, rejected the notion that the icon was/is a pagan idol named "pachamama."
Again, DJR, did you apologize for having called me a "liar."
Please familiarize yourself with CCC, #2477, 2478, 2479.
When is PF going to discipline the gay clerics at the Vatican who were involved in a cocaine fueled gay sex orgy? Until you answer that, you will have NO credibility since it sounds like he is covering up for his people
Mark Thomas said..."DJR, nice bait and switch. Nevertheless, I will respond happily in detail to your post. For now, did you apologize to me (not that I asked for one) for having labeled me a liar a few weeks ago?"
I don't recall calling you a liar with regard go that particular issue.
I do recall pointing out the lies regarding "right wing bloggers" NEVER quoting the pope's comments with regard to such things as abortion, et cetera.
Those were falsehoods, as I amply demonstrated.
Have you apologized to the "right wing bloggers" for publicly stating falsehoods about them?
Please familiarize yourself with CCC #2477, 2478, 2479.
Is the judge excommunicated? If not, then she is a Catholic in good standing, according to you.
And if she is a Catholic in good standing, then she is in communion with the pope. And according to you, she is ipso facto "orthodox."
Another example of a priest that is considered "orthodox" by MT can be found at the link. He is a priest "in good standing," which ostensibly means that he is "orthodox."
The photographs of the service, which very much resemble wedding pictures, were first posted to a Polish social media account and later published by Gloria TV. In one photograph the two women, one in a white wedding dress and the other in a white suit, light a candle together. In the next they hold hands as Kopp holds his hand over them in blessing. Another photo shows the women processing into the church together, preceded by two flower girls. Two beribboned chairs await them at the front of the church.
Kopp is the pastor of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Wolfsburg, Austria who hitherto has been known best for his occasional cabaret acts. According to the Austrian Unkerkaerner newspaper, Kopp has written two cabaret shows since he was ordained in 1997. Previously a “family pastor” in the Diocese of Gurk, Kopp has been with the Diocese of Graz-Seckau since January 2019.
Kopp’s definition of “family” includes both “the root of every personal life existence” and also “every form of relationship among people in the most diverse constellations of common life.”
Remember Bella Dodd? She warned us about non believers (mainly communists) infiltrating the seminaries in the 1040s and 1950s. MT sounds like he would fit in with them through based on his program of spouting disinformation here.

DJR, here is your post from October 25, 2019 at 4:27 PM:
"Mark and several others have been telling us that the statue was the Blessed Virgin and that the pope thought so.
"Well, the pope just blew their lying fabrications right out of the water, specifically, the River Tiber.
"The statue is an idol, Pachamama, and the pope has admitted it.
"Saint Paul says that idols are demons. What we witnessed at the Vatican is the worship of a demon, in the presence of the pope. The punishment is on its way."
1. Pope Francis did not admit that the statue was A pagan idol ("pachamama").
Pope Francis rejected the claim that the statue(s) were pagan.
2. You insisted that I had lied.
DJR, your false claims in question were blown out of the water.
Pope Francis announces retrieval of indigenous statues.
The Holy See Press Office has provided a transcription of Pope Francis’s remarks concerning several indigenous statues, stolen earlier this week and thrown into the Tiber River. The Holy Father spoke off-the-cuff following the liturgical prayer that opened the afternoon session of the 15th General Congregation of the Synod for the Amazon.
Pope Francis' words:
"Good afternoon. I want to say a word about the statues of the pachamama that were taken from the church of the Transpontina – which were there without idolatrous intentions – and were thrown into the Tiber."
1. Pope Francis, via his official statement, rejected the claim that the statue was pagan.
2. In Pope Francis' official transcript, the name "pachamama" was italicized to underline that he rejected the claim that the statue was a pagan idol named "pachamama."
The National Catholic Register, in the second paragraph of the story, noted that "pachamama" had been italicized:
"Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the pope used the word as a means to identify the statues because that is the way they have become known in the Italian media and not as a reference to the goddess."
DJR, contrary to your false claim in question, Pope Francis did not admit that the statue is the pagan idol "pachamama." He said otherwise.
DJR, the above facts are undeniable. You need to get the story straight.
DJR said..."Is the judge excommunicated? If not, then she is a Catholic in good standing, according to you. And if she is a Catholic in good standing, then she is in communion with the pope. And according to you, she is ipso facto "orthodox."
That's your position."
My position is that the competent Church authority within the Diocese of Grand Rapids has supported Father Nolan's determination in regard to Judge Smolenski and her mutiny against Pope Francis' Magisterium.
The competent Church authority has determined that Judge Smolenski is not in good standing with the Church.
The Diocese of Grand Rapids quoted Pope Francis' teaching from Amoris Laetitia to demonstrate that Judge Smolenski has stood in defiance of Pope Francis' authority to teach, govern, and sanctify her.
As I am in communion with Father Nolan, as well as the Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, I side with the priest and diocese.
I pray that Judge Smolenski will enter into good standing with Holy Mother Church.
Mark Thomas said... "DJR, contrary to your false claim in question, Pope Francis did not admit that the statue is the pagan idol "pachamama." He said otherwise."
Wrong. Nice try though.
Vatican News:
"Good afternoon. I want to say a word about the statues of the PACHAMAMA that were taken from the church of the Transpontina – which were there without idolatrous intentions – and were thrown into the Tiber."
I'll go with the Vatican News.
Mark Thomas said... "The competent Church authority has determined that Judge Smolenski is not in good standing with the Church."
You're twisting the issue by obfuscation, and by doing so, you contradict the pope.
Per you, the question as to her "orthodoxy" is whether she is excommunicated, not whether she can receive Holy Communion.
If she is not excommunicated, and there's no evidence that she is, then according to you, the judge in question is "in communion" with Pope Francis and is thereby "orthodox."
Amoris Laetitia refers to those in second unions who cannot receive Holy Communion and yet are still members of the Church. She's in a similar position, albeit a different issue. Therefore, you consider her "orthodox" just like Hans Kung.
That's your position.
Amoris Laetitia
243. It is important that the divorced who have entered a new union should be made to feel part of the Church. They are not excommunicated and they should not be treated as such, since they remain part of the ecclesial community. Footnote 261
Footnote 261 Catechesis (5 August 2015): L’Osservatore Romano, 6 August 2015, p. 7.
You're worried about someone "defaming" you?
Mark Thomas: "Never...ever...will right-wing bloggers promote a story that places Pope Francis in favorable light."
Rorate Caeli publishes pope's letter (while ordinary of B.A.) condemning same sex marriage:
Father McDonald, I thank you for having permitted me to have had my say to DJR in regard to his false claims about "pachamama"...as well as defamatory comments against the Holy Father.
I am far more concerned about DJR's defamation of Pope Francis than my having been defamed by DJR.
But beyond this post, it is pointless for me to continue to engage DJR in regard to the topic at hand.
DJR, You are so deep into having lied that to the bitter end, you will refuse to acknowledge the following undeniable facts:
Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, via an official statement, declared that the name "pachamama" was italicized in Pope Francis' official transcript.
Here is the official transcript of Pope Francis' remarks in question. The name "pachamama" is in italics:
One Catholic and secular news outfit after another reported the following:
Catholic World Report: "Press Office Director Matteo Bruni explained that Francis was using the deity’s name merely as a form of shorthand reference to the statues as they had come to be known in Italian media."
Reuters: "Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the pope used the word as a means to identify the statues because that is the way they have become known in the Italian media and not as a reference to the goddess." ====================================================================================
DJR, the Apostolic See declared officially that Pope Francis did not state that the statue was "pachamama"...the Pope made it clear that the statue is not a pagan idol.
"Good afternoon. I want to say a word about the statues of the PACHAMAMA that were taken from the church of the Transpontina – which were there without idolatrous intentions – and were thrown into the Tiber."
I'll go with the Vatican News."
Perfect. Thank you for that. I will go as well with Vatican News.
2. Vatican News published Pope Francis' official transcript:
3. This is what we read on Vatican News, from the Pope's official transcript:
"Good afternoon. I want to say a word about the statues of the pachamama..."
Vatican News, as per the official transcript, placed "pachamama" in lower case italics."
However, DJR, you pretended that the following is found on Vatican News:
"Good afternoon. I want to say a word about the statues of the PACHAMAMA..."
-- DJR, why did you pretend that Vatican News had written "pachamama" as "PACHAMAMA"?
-- DJR, why did you fail to note that Vatican News italicized (in lower case letters) "pachamama"?
Here is why you failed to have noted the italicized, lower case spelling of "pachamama":
The Apostolic See informed the world that Pope Francis rejected the claim that the statues were that of the pagan goddess pachamama.
Reuters:
"Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the pope used the word as a means to identify the statues because that is the way they have become known in the Italian media and not as a reference to the goddess."
DJR, you twisted and misrepresented the Vatican News story.
DJR said.."Good afternoon. I want to say a word about the statues of the PACHAMAMA that were taken from the church of the Transpontina – which were there without idolatrous intentions – and were thrown into the Tiber."
I'll go with the Vatican News." =================================================================================
Great. The above from Vatican News has has shattered your false claim that the statues, as well as the Vatican Garden Event, represented pagan idolatry.
As per the above Vatican News story, Pope Francis rejected the notion "idolatrous intentions" were linked to the statues/Vatican Gardens Event.
Mark Thomas said: "DJR, Pope Francis did not...did not...identify the icon as 'pachamama.'"
Vatican News: "Good afternoon. I want to say a word about the statues of the PACHAMAMA that were taken from the church of the Transpontina – which were there without idolatrous intentions – and were thrown into the Tiber."
You're wrong.
Just like you were wrong about "right wing bloggers" NEVER saying anything good about the pope.
Just like you were wrong about the "disciples of Satan" comment.
Just like you were wrong about someone being orthodox and heterodox at the same time.
As long as you continue to promote your personal opinions above the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Faith, misrepresent the True Faith and what others do/say, you will be called out on it.
Mark, you have stated numerous times on Father McDonald's blog that "right wing bloggers" NEVER, EVER say anything good about the pope or relate his good statements.
Go ahead and tell us whether that is a true statement, and I will prove you wrong.

2. In Pope Francis' official transcript, the name "pachamama" was italicized to underline that he rejected the claim that the statue was a pagan idol named "pachamama."
The National Catholic Register, in the second paragraph of the story, noted that "pachamama" had been italicized:
http://www.ncregister.com/blog/edward-pentin/pachamama
3. Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press office, issued the following in regard to Pope Francis' use of the name "pachamama":
https://nationalpost.com/pmn/environment-pmn/pope-asks-forgiveness-for-theft-of-controversial-amazon-statues
You defamed Pope Francis. You defamed me.
Pax.

Father McDonald, I thank you for having permitted me to have had my say to DJR in regard to his false claims about "pachamama"...as well as defamatory comments against the Holy Father.
I am far more concerned about DJR's defamation of Pope Francis than my having been defamed by DJR.
But beyond this post, it is pointless for me to continue to engage DJR in regard to the topic at hand.
Thank you, Father.

The name "pachamama" is in italics:
https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2019-10/pope-francis-comments-on-statues-stolen-from-church.html
https://catholicherald.co.uk/news/2019/10/25/pope-francis-apologises-that-amazon-synod-pachamama-was-thrown-into-tiber-river/
=================================================================================
One Catholic and secular news outfit after another reported the following:
Catholic World Report: "Press Office Director Matteo Bruni explained that Francis was using the deity’s name merely as a form of shorthand reference to the statues as they had come to be known in Italian media."
===============================================================================
Reuters: "Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the pope used the word as a means to identify the statues because that is the way they have become known in the Italian media and not as a reference to the goddess."
====================================================================================
DJR, the Apostolic See declared officially that Pope Francis did not state that the statue was "pachamama"...the Pope made it clear that the statue is not a pagan idol.
I will move on, now. Thank you.
DJR said...

Perfect. Thank you for that. I will go as well with Vatican News.
https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2019-10/pope-francis-comments-on-statues-stolen-from-church.html
1. You have lied again.
DJR, please begin to tell the truth.
Thank you.
Pax.

Great. The above from Vatican News has has shattered your false claim that the statues, as well as the Vatican Garden Event, represented pagan idolatry.
As per the above Vatican News story, Pope Francis rejected the notion "idolatrous intentions" were linked to the statues/Vatican Gardens Event.
Thank you, DJR, for having agreed with me.
Thank you for the Vatican News story in question.
