DO PEOPLE TODAY EVEN KNOW WHAT THE AVE MARIA AND THE LORD'S PRAYER EVEN ARE??????

The Deacon's Bench wonders how many people realize they are hearing a sung Catholic prayer. How shocking is that? But it is a legitimate question today considering how many nones there are.

For example, in the south well into the 1960's everyone no matter how religious or with no real religion knew how to recite The Lord's Prayer. Why? Not necessarily because they went to Church on Sunday, but because it was recited every morning at the beginning of the school day IN SOUTHERN PUBLIC SCHOOLS!

That's not the case today and many southerners no longer know the Lord's Prayer by heart or even know that it is a Christian Prayer given to us by Our Lord. In fact, they don't even know who the Lord is!

In my public junior high public school in Augusta, 8th and 9th grades, we had "Protestant" chapel once a month with a Protestant minister preaching a sermon! And it was called "chapel"!

But, should a secular commercial exploit a Latin Catholic Prayer to sell Amazon Prime because it sound pretty?

From the Deacon's Bench:

Behold, the new commercial for Amazon Prime. I don’t know if most Americans seeing this realize they are hearing a sung Catholic prayer.
But here it is.

Shocking? No. There are millions of people who have never heard the Ave Maria, let alone have had the opportunity to understand that it is a Catholic prayer.

Bee here:

Our Lord will have His way, whenever He wants....even in having His Mother praised by pagans.

Never lose confidence in Our Lord. He truly is the Lord of all. Since He is God, He will not fail. Humans are puny, like ants. And yes, ants can attack each other and kill and maim each other, and torture each other, but they cannot kill God.

It is incredibly ironic that Amazon is using the Ave Maria... Hail Mary! Full of grace. I wonder how long it will be before someone clues the clueless in, and they pull the commercial and fire the company that made it.

God bless.

There are probably millions who have never heard of Franz Schubert, whose song this is. There are also (sadly) so-called educated people whose descent into cultural relativism is so advanced that they don't think it matters.

John Nolan,

Franz Schubert is no longer heard of, because he is just a "dead, white man" and liberals have banned dead, white men from their world view. Are you experiencing this phenomenon in England?

Fortunately, appreciation of music crosses political divides. Thank God for that. Shostakovich nearly lost his life under the Soviet regime. Richard Strauss fell out of favour with the Nazis but he was so well-known that they didn't dare lay a finger on him. Prokoviev was something of a Soviet hack, but his music is not judged by this alone.

I know people of very liberal credentials who appreciate music.

Oh? Have the history texts written out Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Madison, and The Adams Brothers? No.

Do we find in our books tales of Einstein, Fermi, Pasteur, and Fleming? Yes.

Is mention made of Caesar and Antony, Henry VIII and Charlemagne, Patton and Eisenhower? Of course.

Only in a twisted, paranoid mind have dead white men been banned from anyone's world view.
