Rorate Caeli posts a great comment by Serre Varweij and you can read it by pressing Rorate Caeli’s title below.
I had wondered how in the Name of God and all that is Holy that Pope Leo could have nearly 200 cardinals talk about so many topics in such a short time. I think the “messy” meeting opened his eyes to a much needed longer meeting in June, thanks be to God.
But Pope Francis made a mess out of the College of Cardinals with His Holiness’ idiosyncratic selections of cardinals from the peripheries and in some cases the choice made, without asking the person, based upon like the person in a subjective way.
And then Pope Francis sidelined them and ignored them to the point that when they came to the Conclave to elect a new pope, they didn’t know each other at all or how the Vatican works!
As progressive priest-Cardinal Radcliff said, many Cardinals were miserable and unhappy with Pope Francis and then he said this:
“A Church which is miserable, can’t preach the Gospel!”
Overall, this first meeting is a good start, although messy and maybe not bringing about revolutionary decisions on hot topic issues. It is a good start and off we go!
And I think the Cardinals are now content that they are being returned to their important canonical position by Pope Leo—continuing to reverse the messes of Pope Francis!
Pope Leo’s first extraordinary consistory: A messy learning curve and a handful of hints
for Rorate Caeli
Pope Leo has just held his first extraordinary consistory with the College of Cardinals. The pope gave the cardinals a chance to perform one of their two key tasks, that is, to advise the Pope in governing the universal Church, even before he appointed any of his own cardinals. The meeting came to be viewed as more important when it was announced that it would deal with liturgy, with synodality, with Pope Francis’ controversial curial reforms and the late pope’s first important document Evangelii Gaudium.

Holy Mother Church will be miserable as long as Pope Leo keeps his curia as presently constituted. Just replacing Cardinals Roach, Fernandes ( Tucho), and Parolin would mitigate the toxicity (oh alright, throw Cupich in for good measure).
How can this be? Our resident papalotor keeps telling us Francis was the loveliest, most fluffiest pope evah!
We are dealing with Serre Varweij's typical right-wing, anti-Pope Francis (requiescat in pace) trash. But then, Rorate Caeli is expected to present Pope Francis in negative fashion.
Anyway, about the only valuable parts of the article in question are those in which Serre Varweij presented Pope Leo XIV's words as is...devoid of Varweij's misleading right-wing spin.
Therefore, the following is valuable as Pope Leo XIV has shattered (he had done so previously) the preposterous claim that Big Bad Bergoglio had "cancelled" Pope Benedict XVI:
Serre Varweij noted that Pope Leo XIV had "paired John Paul II with Paul VI and Francis with Benedict, rather than the usual mainstream pairings of Paul VI with John XXIII and Benedict XVI with John Paul II."
"The link between Benedict and Francis clearly interprets Francis through Benedict.
"He cites Pope Benedict’s words to the complex and contested Aparecida Conference, and then claims Francis agreed with it and repeatedly said so.
"...now Pope Leo has read both this conference and Francis through Pope Benedict, making Francis a continuation of how Benedict build on John Paul II."
=======
Pope Leo XIV has insisted that the Vatican II Era Pontificates are in wonderful continuity with each other...none of the preposterous nonsense that this, or that Pope, had cancelled another Pope.
Pope Francis haters will continue the defamation that Pope Francis had "cancelled" so-and-so. But Pope Leo XIV has...cancelled...such defamatory, anti-Catholic nonsense.
=======
Serre Varweij also noted the tremendous importance that Pope Leo XIV has attached to Pope Francis' Evangelii Gaudium. But then, Mister Varweij could not have done otherwise. Pope Francis' teachings in question were front-and-center during the Extraordinary Consistory.
=======
Serre Varweij noted that the "Pope’s address on the Second Vatican council had multiple important implications."
But Serre Varweij stated that Pope Leo XIV's unrelenting promotion of Vatican II is "somewhat out of touch with younger clergy and faithful, to whom the council is an increasingly irrelevant footnote in Church history..."
Anybody who has viewed Vatican II as "an increasingly irrelevant footnote in Church history..." is out of touch with Pope Leo XIV and the True Church.
=======
Serre Varweij noted that Pope Leo XIV has "provided a clear hermeneutic of continuity for all the Popes since the Council..."

Wow MT! So he’s right wing for supporting Pope Leo. I would say he’s not right wing but orthodox, he’s the same through both pope and evaluates them accordingly!
More mindless garbage from MT Suit, a leftwing cultist.
It's right-wing trash until MT agrees with it, then it's unassailable truth. This is the typical tactic of mindless ideologues, and MT has few other rhetorical tactics.
Nick
MT Suit,
When are you going to finally respond to the following or are you going to cluck like a chicken and run away?
1) What diocese do you reside in?
2) What did Francis do to discipline the clerics at the Vatican engaged in a cocaine fueled gay sex orgy?
Please don't hide! We so need your answers! Holy, holy!
Serre Varweij is right-wing, anti-Pope Francis (requiescat in pace), as that is who he is...not because I said that. New Catholic (Rorate Caeli) is a Pope Francis hater. That is undeniable.
Pax.

Your comment is not responding to anything anyone said here, as always.
Nick
I'll add #3:
MT, when will you retract your defamation against me, since which time you've repeatedly expounded on the righteousness of your cause as most frequent commenter on this blog?
Nick
MT Suit, afraid to answer my 2 questions?
MT Suit,
Show some intellectual and moral courage and answer my questions. Otherwise you are as corrupt and empty as Francis!
As I had noted, Serre Varweij stated that Pope Leo XIV's unrelenting promotion of Vatican II is "somewhat out of touch with younger clergy and faithful, to whom the council is an increasingly irrelevant footnote in Church history..."
Love or hate the Council...but it's bizarre that a sentient adult Catholic would view Vatican II "an increasingly irrelevant footnote in Church history."
From Pope Saint John XXIII to Pope Leo XIV, Rome has proclaimed Vatican II, Vatican II, Vatican II...24/7/365.
Pope Benedict insisted that to obtain full communion with the Church, the SSPX had been required to embrace Vatican II.
The Council has altered the Church in dramatic fashion.
"Irrelevant"...it's unbelievable that anybody would say such a thing about the Council.
Pope Leo XIV has just shattered that preposterous claim.
Pax.

MT, Pope Leo graciously listened to Cardinal Zen and Demos (aka, Cardinal Pell). Neither of them would be demonized by Pope Leo although I am sure you would and you would try to undercut their prophetic voices by calling these two Francis haters. You’d better be careful, because the criteria you use to demonize those who opposed Pope Francis less than helpful aspects of his papacy, could well be applied to Pope Leo. Is he a Francis hater?
Father McDonald, why would I label holy Pope Leo XIV a "Francis hater"?
As you know, Pope Leo XIV has declared repeatedly that Pope Francis (requiscant in pace) was filled with holiness...and had blessed us with a magnificent Pontificate.
Why just yesterday, via his speech to diplomats, Pope Leo XIV declared:
"This past year saw many significant events, beginning with those directly affecting the life of the Church, which experienced a profound Jubilee, and saw the return to the Father’s house of my venerable predecessor, Pope Francis.
"The whole world gathered around his coffin on the day of his funeral, and sensed the loss of a father who had guided the People of God with immense pastoral charity."
As he had done on multiple occasions, Pope Leo XIV has insisted that holy Pope Francis has reached Heaven...and as he has noted multiple times, Pope Francis had blessed us with a holy, first-class Pontificate.
Then we have the following beautiful declaration from Pope Leo XIV's Christmas Greetings to the Curia:
" I wish first of all to remember my beloved predecessor, Pope Francis, who this year concluded his earthly life.
"His prophetic voice, pastoral style and rich magisterium have marked the Church’s journey in recent years, encouraging us above all to place God’s mercy at the center, to give renewed impetus to evangelization, and to be a joyful Church, welcoming to all and attentive to the poorest."
Pax.

MT, if youre going to turn your favorite pope into the Catholic Muhammad, at least figure out whether he’s plural or singular.
Nick
I guess Bishop Varden, appointee of the holy holy holy Tremendous Oracle, either holds “bizarre,” “preposterous,” and “unbelievable” opinions or he’s not a “sentient adult,” since he said something quite similar in the last couple years.
I’m shocked—shocked!—that MT would foment such disdain for a successor to the Apostles. But then, MT has never shied away from spewing his venom at anyone who disagrees with his declarations and proclamations, pope/bishop or not.
