The collapse of Catholicism in South America. I can't say it is fair to lay this at Francis' feet, but he probably didn't help the situation there much.
Well financed, well organized, and highly proselytizing American Fundamentalist Protestants went into South America after Vatican II and when the Church had gone crazy with Liberation Theology, communist ideologies and socialism and pulled many confused Catholics into their grip. The fundamentalists focused on God, a relationship with Him and on conversion, as well as exhuberant prayer. The Charismatic movement in the Catholic Church paved the way for charismatic Catholics to join Pentecostal Protestantism, which I think is a bi-product of a less than nuanced from of ecumenism after Vatican II. All of this groundwork started in the late 1960’s. Prior to that there was a clear Catholic identity and a clear way to celebrate the Mass and Sacraments. When clarity of identity is loss, people grasp onto anything that clarifies for them what became muddy in the Church.
Let's be honest, protestant sects succeed in South America and elsewhere because they preach Christ. Catholic bishops focus on class-struggle and Church politics. Protestant missionaries are grateful that Catholics baptize but don't catechise.
William is so right and by the looks of things, nothing is changing in this regard. American Bishops are absolutely out of control and doubling down. TDS is real at the NCCB and Leo is fully on-board as far as I can tell. He is nuanced but make no mistake, he is all in with this ilk. I so hoped for better but it's not to be.
They are tough on Republicans and very, very week on the Party of Intrinsic Evil. They are also antagonizing the most faithful group of Catholics and will likely chase many of them away. The USCCB and the Dems have a unity of purpose: replacing people they have chased away (or aborted). They need illegal aliens to vote and fill the pews.
