LET’S GET POLITICAL, POLITICAL, POLITICAL…FROM THE ITALIAN PERSPECTIVE

 Silere non possum
provides an English translation of their Italian commentary on the Trump administration in the USA. Keep in mind, that Italy and all of Europe, if not the entire world, are concerned about certain elements of the Trump Administration’s chaos and saber rattling, as well as actual military action already used in some countries, threatened for other countries and for some citizens of a particular state in the USA.

Silere non possum praises the three most progressive cardinals in the USA for using Pope Leo’s recent long elocution to ambassadors accredited to the Vatican.

Here is the Silere non possum English commentary. Press the title for their full English commentary:

Cardinals Cupich, McElroy and Tobin challenge the drift towards bellicosity: US foreign policy judged in the light of the Pope’s words

Pope Francis would probably have fired Bishop Barron!

Silere non possum..."...certain blogs and websites backed by American donors close to the Trump administration, which had launched harsh attacks on Cardinal Blase J. Cupich."

"According to that account, the award conferred on Senator Dick Durbin amounted to an endorsement of his positions on abortion.

"Pope Leo XIV, responding to a loaded question from an American journalist, had reframed the issue more broadly: “one cannot judge an entire senatorial career on the basis of a single issue.”

"He then recalled a criterion of moral coherence: those who describe themselves as pro-life and oppose abortion, yet support the death penalty or accept inhumane treatment of migrants, ultimately hollow out their own claim to be truly pro-life."

=======

A "loaded" question?

Anyway, Pope Leo XIV's rejection of the vile right-wing attacks against Cardinal Cupich was based upon Church teaching. I continue to appreciate the wonderful support that Pope Leo XIV had rendered unto Cardinal Cupich.

In turn, on Father McDonald's blog, as well as elsewhere, right-wing verbal attacks against Pope Leo XIV had followed.

Example: TJM's opinion of Pope Francis:

"I’m starting to think we have Another lemon in the Vatican."

=======

Certain right-wing reactionaries here favor their right-wing extremism over Church teaching. But Pope Leo XIV's answer to the reporter's question was based upon Church teaching.

They are probably the three most arrogant bishops in the country. No wonder Francis made them cardinals. Archbishop Chaput is one of the best, but being conservative never had a chance. He should have been a cardinal. His books are great reads.

Although I have to sadly agree with you, I am puzzled why these three cardinals, the most progressive and least trusted by American Catholics wrote this missive without other cardinals and bishops signing on too. What is the point, then, of NCCB? Why did the cardinals not collaborate with that structure. I certainly think any bishop of a diocese or archdiocese could write a letter about these kinds of things as that is their role as individual heads of dioceses but one, two or three bishops, be they cardinals or not, and apparantly independent of NCCB, seems to be rather divisive. I am puzzled by it and, Vatican News published their missive too, so presumably this is Pope Leo’s attitude too, but I find it odd nonetheless.

Not sure, SNP seems to occupy an odd spot in the church spectrum. Seems to be at least reasonably spiritually grounded. Very anti-Francis, for whatever reason, but also not very traditional and, I'm starting to suspect, maybe even pro-lgbt.

It is possible that other cardinals and bishops do not have the courage to stand up to the Trump regime. Hence, they did not "sign on." If that were not troubling enough, there may be some - I hope it is few - that actually support the actions of this corrupt administration.

Add to their voices that I Archbishop Timothy Broglio who has raised the same issue that Trump's DOJ and Pentagon are now investigating Senator Mark Kelly on - reminding troops that they do not - and should not - obey illegal orders. From the Pillar: "The archbishop of the U.S. military services said Sunday that he does not believe military action to take control of Greenland could be justified – and that U.S. troops in good conscience could refuse orders to do so."

The bishops of the USA through USCCB have recently released statements regarding the action of the Trump regime, so there is collaboration aplenty among them. This is one of the most recent: https://www.facebook.com/reel/3916203965183455

Actually, a massive amount of Catholics throughout the world care about teachings presented by "Church leaders."

In regard to anti-Catholic elements of President Trump's deportation policy:

About 40 percent of adult Catholics in America support Holy Mother Church's teachings/Pope Leo XIV/our Cardinals and bishops.

Millions of adult Catholics in America are on the Church's side in regard to the issue in question.

=======

Deo gratias that holy Cardinals Cupich, McElroy, as well as Tobin, have, with holy Pope Leo XIV, opposed President Trump's trampling of non-violent immigrants/migrants.

As Pope Leo XIV has made clear, this is a pro-life issue.

MT Suit,

You must live in a cocoon. These are the very worst cardinals in the US with hard left political leanings who NEVER criticize Democrat presidents for anything, even when they were doing the exact same thing they are now criticizing President Trump for.

Illegal aliens are breaking the law by being here and not other country puts up with it. In the old days, Obama booted them out because they were taking jobs away from Americans. Since you are a master of cut and paste those news stories are readily available. You also are ignoring the murders, robberies and rapes committed by these illegal aliens which do get reported regularly outside of the fake mainstream news industry.

Let me know when the Vatican permits illegal aliens to breach its borders and lives off of Vatican largesse. Until then, buzz off. You're beyond annoying at this point. You're just a sock puppet for the Left which supports abortion on demand, transgenderism and child mutilation,

Mark Thomas said...

The beautiful statement issued by holy Cardinals Cupich, Tobin, as well as McElroy, stands in tremendous support of Pope Leo XIV powerful pro-life address last week to diplomats.

That was our holy Pope's tremendous "coming out" address in regard to pro-life issues.

In union with Pope Leo XIV, the three Cardinals declared:

"...the contribution of Pope Leo in outlining a truly moral foundation for international relations to the Vatican diplomatic corps this month has provided us an enduring ethical compass for establishing the pathway for American foreign policy in the coming years.

"Pope Leo also reiterates Catholic teaching that “the protection of the right to life constitutes the indispensable foundation for every other human right” and that abortion and euthanasia are destructive of that right.

"He points to the need for international aid to safeguard the most central elements of human dignity, which are under assault because of the movement by wealthy nations to reduce or eliminate their contributions to humanitarian foreign assistance programs.

"As pastors and citizens, we embrace this vision for the establishment of a genuinely moral foreign policy for our nation.

"We seek to build a truly just and lasting peace, that peace which Jesus proclaimed in the Gospel.

"We renounce war as an instrument for narrow national interests and proclaim that military action must be seen only as a last resort in extreme situations, not a normal instrument of national policy.

"We seek a foreign policy that respects and advances the right to human life..."

=======

In line with our august Roman Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, Cardinals Cupich, Tobin, and McElroy have stood for the Culture of Life, which, unfortunately, President Trump, via certain of his policies, has trampled.

Donald Trump, the man, so to speak, has long proclaimed respect for Holy Mother Church. Today, he has the opportunity to reject his policies that, in turn, trample Church teaching.

May President Trump stand with Pope Leo XIV, as well as Cardinals Cupich, Tobin, and McElroy, whom, in charitable fashion, have called upon Mister Trump to embrace the Culture of Life.

Regardless of our attitudes about these three cardinals, what they write is succinct and in line with Catholic teaching. I don’t fault that. I agree with what has been written and what is implied but not said explicitly is that President Trump is exacerbating the polarization happening in our country rather than diffusing it and is doing the same thing on the world stage, all the while seeking by himself, almost, to promote peace. I’m with Pope Leo on this one, in terms of what the three Cardinals quote from Pope Leo. I disagree with FRMJK about the courage of other cardinals and bishops in this regard. I am wondering if these three did this on their own and without consulting the President of the USCCB or any other cardinals or bishops. If they did not, this is in fact a form of exacerbating polarization with the American bishops and thus should also be condemned too.

TJM said...

Father McDonald,

They spout Catholic teaching only against Republican presidents, not Democrat ones. If you don't think Obama or Biden were not extremely polarizing, you are not living in reality. I remember Obama saying, if they bring a knife to a fight, we bring a gun. And this from Senile Biden, "if you don't vote Democrat, you ain't Black." I could go on with countless other examples, but you get the point, I am sure.

Fr. Allan J. McDonald said...

They were wrong then and they would be wrong now, not to make this kind of statement. Fortunately, they corrected their omissions this time. I can’t complain about that and I know, TJM, you wouldn’t either. They are doing the right thing this time and did the wrong thing the last time.

TJM said...

Father McDonald, and they WILL DO THE WRONG THING again when a Democrat is in the White House. If Pius XI were alive today, he would condemn the modern Democratic Party like he did the Communists, Fascists, and Nazis.

Fr. Allan J. McDonald said...

Well the scenic always focuses on the negative, but this I know you are rejoicing with me and all orthodox Catholics, that they did the right thing this time, praised be Jesus Christ!

Cynic

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

Bishops are free to act on their own, they do it all the time. The current ruckus with Bishop Martin in Charlotte makes that obvious, as did the threat of excommunication of Rainbow Girls in the Diocese of Lincoln a few years back. I don't think that led to "exacerbating polarization" at the time. While there may have been a raised eyebrow or a sad shake of the head in the Conference, no condemnation that I am aware of followed....

Maybe their "eminences" need to read more things like this:

PEACE AND PUBLIC SAFETY IN MINNEAPOLIS! We have arrested over 10,000 criminal illegal aliens who were killing Americans, hurting children and reigning terror in Minneapolis because Tim Walz and Jacob Frey refuse to protect their own people and instead protect criminals. In the last 6 weeks, our brave DHS law enforcement have arrested 3,000 criminal illegal aliens including vicious murderers, rapists, child pedophiles and incredibly dangerous individuals. A HUGE victory for public safety.

There is MASSIVE Fraud in Minneapolis, at least $19 billion and that’s just the tip of iceberg. Our Homeland Security Investigators are on the ground in Minneapolis conducting wide scale investigations to get justice for the American people who have been robbed blind.

Fr. Allan J. McDonald said...

AI SUMMARY:
That the cardinals should have released their letter on political polarization and foreign policy through the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is a matter of internal church diplomacy and opinion, but they did not use the USCCB process.
The cardinals issued the statement independently, as individual archbishops, rather than a formal, collective statement requiring the consensus of the entire body of U.S. bishops.
Key Context
Independent Action: The three cardinals issued their statement as a joint press release from their respective archdioceses on January 19, 2026. The statement was a rare, independent intervention in U.S. foreign policy debates, specifically a critique of the current administration's actions.
Avoiding Polarization: The cardinals themselves stated their aim was to move the national debate on the moral foundation of foreign policy beyond "polarization, partisanship, and narrow economic and social interests".
Reasons for Bypassing USCCB: Observers noted that the USCCB is often slow and internally divided, dominated by a conservative majority. An individual action may have been a more effective and timely way to deliver their message without getting mired in internal conference politics.
Vatican Context: The cardinals met with Pope Leo XIV earlier in the month, and some sources suggest their statement was made with his implicit approval and inspired by his recent address to diplomats. The statement was also posted prominently on the Vatican's homepage.
Differing Views: The independent action highlights existing divisions within the U.S. Catholic hierarchy. While some praised the cardinals for speaking up, the fact that they bypassed the usual conference procedures drew implicit or explicit criticism from other Catholic figures who felt all such statements should follow the communal process.

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

Hey TeeJayEmm - DOGE saved a pittance. The largest THIRTEEN of his claimed savings are false - lies.

"To sort DOGE’s bogus cuts from its successes, The Times looked at federal records for the 40 largest items on the “Wall of Receipts.” In at least 28 cases, DOGE got it wrong.

Its errors included:

Double-counting. DOGE took credit for canceling the same Department of Energy grant twice, adding $500 million in duplicate savings.

Timeline errors. One contract that DOGE claimed credit for ending had actually been terminated by the Biden administration, weeks before DOGE began its work. Three more items on DOGE’s list had simply expired. These were pandemic-era contracts with pharmacies that provided free Covid-19 testing for the uninsured. They were originally allowed to spend up to a combined $12.2 billion, but they never came close to that level. Then, in May, the three contracts ended on schedule.

DOGE still claimed credit for killing them, highlighting $6 billion in savings.

Misclassifications. Seven programs that DOGE claimed to have terminated are not dead, including four that were resurrected by court rulings.

Exaggerations. In 16 cases, DOGE greatly exaggerated its cuts. Many, including those two large Defense Department contracts, relied on an accounting trick that produced “savings” with little real-world effect. DOGE lowered the official “ceiling value” of contracts — reducing the theoretical limit on what the government could eventually pay — without changing its actual spending."
