Interestingly enough, the "Communion-plate," as the Vatican tends to call it, is called for in the Novus Ordo. Good on Bishop Prevost for having the black said and red done, and I guess its omission is another abuse for Bishop Martin to painstakingly, minutely correct (lol)
We have the communion cloth which the priest holds against the chalice while the communicant pulls the end up under one's chin. Both serve a very useful purpose safeguarding falling particles.
