Benedict XVI Letter to Fr Dave Pivonka TOR
Money byte:
“With these considerations I only wanted to indicate the direction in which my work has led me,” he writes. ”I sincerely hope that the International Symposium at Franciscan University of Steubenville will be helpful in the struggle for a right understanding of the Church and the world in our time.”

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI declared in his letter that Vatican II was "not only meaningful, but necessary."
During the past 60 years, Pope Emeritus' defense and promotion of Vatican II has been powerful and unrelenting.
Father McDonald, I realize that you believe that Pope Francis despises Pope Emeritus...and is determined to erase Emeritus' legacy/Pontificate. I disagree with that notion.
More important, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has praised Pope Francis as a holy man...has insisted that he has enjoyed a great friendship with Pope Francis...and that Pope Francis' Pontificate, and Pope Emeritus' former Pontificate, are in continuity with each other.
Pope Francis is unable to erase any Pontificate.
In regard to Pope Emeritus (or any Pope), the only legacy of his that matters is whether he conducted his life in holy fashion. I am confident that such is the case in regard to Pope Emeritus.
But if we wish to play the legacy card...what is Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI's legacy?...(which is really a worldly enterprise), then there is little doubt that Pope Emeritus' legacy is linked to Vatican II.
Pope Emeritus has spent 60 years having insisted that the Council was necessary, in line with Holy Tradition, and has blessed the Church.
Pope Francis is not Pope Emeritus' enemy. The person who has denounced Vatican II...insisted that the Council is not in line with Holy Tradition...that Vatican II has not blessed the Church...is Pope Emeritus' enemy.
That is the person who has worked to erase Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI's "legacy."
Pax.

Mark Thomas,
As always, wrong. Pope Benedict harshly criticized the “banal, made up on the spot liturgy.” Unlike you, he could recognize mistakes. And his predecessor does not because he is a leftist first, a Churchman second.
