A HEAD SCRATCHER

Cardinal Schola 2019:

“To those that think that the Church has fallen behind, I respond that we are rather going backwards, specifically to the epoch of the debates between conservatives and progressives after the Council,” Cardinal Scola wrote. “I am seeing a renewed opposition, with much overexcitement, between guardians of tradition as rigidly understood and the proponents of conforming practices, but also doctrine, to worldly demands.”

Pope Francis on October 10, 2022:

How often, in the wake of the Council, did Christians prefer to choose sides in the Church, not realizing that they were breaking their Mother’s heart! How many times did they prefer to cheer on their own party rather than being servants of all? To be progressive or conservative rather than being brothers and sisters? To be on the “right” or “left”, rather than with Jesus? To present themselves as “guardians of the truth” or “pioneers of innovation”

I am not positively impressed by either statement. We are negotiating with God from a weak position by believing that forgiveness means forbearance of the offense.

Brothers and sisters can and do commonly disagree about anything without ceasing to be brothers and sisters. The problem for Catholics today is that ideological forces have captured the theological playground. These forces want to change the rules of the game not to play the game by the rules their Creator designed. The new forces contesting have no respect for established verities but want to shape the debate, rig the contest if you will. They call this process synodality. Cardinal Pell rightly points out that it is one thing when Catholic Bishops are involved and it is quite another when the participants are a mob of misanthropes up to no-good.
