Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost . . .

EPISTLE
Acts 1: 1-11
The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, of all things which Jesus began to do and to teach, until the day on which, giving commandments by the Holy Ghost to the Apostles whom He had chosen, He was taken up: to whom also He showed Himself alive after His Passion by many proofs, for forty days appearing to them and speaking of the Kingom of God. And eating together with them, He commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but should wait for the promise of the Father, which you have heard (saith He) by My mouth; for John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. They therefore who were come together asked Him, saying: Lord, wilt Thou at this time restore again the kingdom of Israel? But He said to them: It is not for you to know the times or moments which the Father hath put in His own power: but you shall receive the power of the Holy Ghost coming upon you, and you shall be witnesses unto Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the uttermost part of the earth. And when He had said these things, while they looked on, He was raised up: and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they were beholding Him going up to heaven, behold two men stood by them in white garments, who also said: Ye men of Galilee, why stand you looking up to heaven? This Jesus, who is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come as you have seen Him going into heaven.
GRADUAL
Psalms 46: 6
Alleluia, alleluia. V.: God is ascended with a shout, and the Lord with the sound of a trumpet. Alleluia. V.: (Ps. 67. 18). The Lord is in Sinai, in the holy place; ascending on high He hath led captivity captive.

GOSPEL
Mark 16: 14-20
At that time Jesus appeared to the eleven as they were at table: and He upbraided them with their incredulity and hardness of heart, because they did not believe them who had seen Him after He was risen again. And He said to them: Go ye into the whole world and preach the Gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved: but he that beleiveth not shall be condemned. And these signs shall follow them that believe: In My Name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they shall drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay their hands upon the sick, and they shall recover. And the Lord Jesus, after He had spoken unto them, was taken up into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God. But they going forth preached everywhere, the Lord working withal, and confirming the word with signs that followed.

OFFERTORY
Psalms 46: 6

God is ascended with a shout, and the Lord with the sound of a trumpet, alleluia.

SECRET - Accept, O Lord, the gifts we offer up to Thee, for the glorious Ascension of Thy Son: and mercifully grant that we may be freed from present perils and attain unto everlasting life. Through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity . . .
PREFACE (Preface for Ascension) - It it truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God: through Christ our Lord. Who, after His Resurrection, appeared openly to all His disciples, and, while they looked on, was taken up into heaven, that He might grant unto us to be sharers in His own divinity. And therefore, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:
Special Form of Communicnates (Ascension) - Communicating, and keeping this most holy day on which Thine only-begotten Son our Lord set at the right hand of Thy glory the substance of our frail human nature, which He had taken to Himself; and also reverencing the memory, first, of the glorious Mary, ever Virgin, Mother of the same our God and Lord Jesus Christ: as also . . .
COMMUNION
Psalms 67: 33, 34
Sing ye to the Lord, who mounteth above the heaven of heavens to the East, alleluia.

POST COMMUNION - Grant to us, we beseech Thee, almighty and merciful God, that we may obtain the invisible effects of that which we have shared by communion in visible Mysteries. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost

We observed this feast yeaterday with one Low Mass 0700 and High Mass at 1900. Our preist is a workhorse. He seems to always be so happy. Even delivers bad news with that Midwestern grin and abashed expression. What blessing he has been to our parish. I wish I could tell some of the ways he has councelled me in confession. He played a lot of sports so he knows how to recover from mistakes and to help us do it too.

Did your traditional folks around Savannah get a mass for Ascension yesterday?

The picture of Mass in the bombed out cathedral says it all. The beauty, majesty, and adherence to form and substance NO MATTER THE SITUATION, is a hallmark of the EF. No Halloween nonsense, no dancing, no silly rainbow vestments, no "how y'all doin....Father Pat here coming to you live from the battlefield..."

The comfort and stability of the EF, in the midst of chaos, and in this case violence, offers a refuge from this world and an opportunity to contemplate the next.

Tom, Yes indeed!

Fr. Allan J. McDonald said...

there is no daily EF Mass in Savannah.

So FrMJK, there a market opportunity. Tell the bishop you are going start one. Put it in the bulletin. Do an interview on local radio and TV for people interested in seeing one. I bet you will be surprised.

It might be worth considering adding traditional masses on important Holy Days, like Ascension Thursday, even if there isn't a daily mass in Savannah.

I can't believe any traditionalist would go to a mass with Mike acting like a priest, at least once they knew anything about him.

"So FrMJK, there a market opportunity."

It's call evangelization. The TLM is key to the NEW evangelization, for the new generation of serious young Catholics.

Dan said...

"Does this EF Mass make me look like a rigid neo-pelagian?"

(I'm tired of the Pope criticising faithful Catholics. The only ones left in the pews after years of abuse stories are the "rigid.")

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

Mass as fulfilling a "market opportunity?"

I think we should stick with the Lord's intention on the purpose of the mass...

Anonymous said...

I doubt that your lower-case 'mass' fulfils the Lord's intention.

TJM said...

Kavanaugh just wants to stick with what he knows - market failure!!!

Where was the picture taken?

Fr.K, do you know how to say the TLM? I think if were a priest I would want to know. Since our faith is informed by Scripture AND Tradition, not knowing the TLM handicaps one in his Catholic identity and faith understanding. Don't you think so too?

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

"Don't you think so too?"

No, I don't share that view.

I am pleased to see that my use of tthe term ‘marketing’ was even more successful than I expected. I understand that people dislike the modern ‘marketing’ environment and many of its methods. It is, however applied behavioural science and the Church loves science. Many people think of marketing as tricking people into something. At what point does preaching or proselytizing become trickery? Somewhere between Aquinas and L. Ron Hubbard. So the wise use of the printing press, logic, social organization, and electronic media (ahem) can advance the cause of Christ, as He intended.

Henry said...

"Since our faith is informed by Scripture AND Tradition, not knowing the TLM handicaps one in his Catholic identity and faith understanding."

Yes. For confirmation, just read the comments of priests who refuse to learn or celebrate the TLM. Typically, they exhibit--usually obviously, sometimes painfully--an ignorance of their own identity, either as Catholics or (especially) as priests.

Almost every priest I know who's learned the TLM, has said that only then did he learn who and what he was as a priest. These ubiquitous testimonies suggest to me as a layman that, sadly, most Novus Ordo priests who don't learn the TLM will never truly know what it is to be a real priest.

TJM said...

Kavanaugh is just another superficial priest doubling down on failure. His views are irrelevant. I bet he would make a great barista, though

Fr. Allan J. McDonald said...

TJM, please stop obsessing on Fr.MJK and going after him, do as my disclaimer states, deal with the comment not the person. I would deeply appreciate it. Obsessing on someone isn't healthy on many levels.

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

"Almost every priest I know who's learned the TLM, has said that only then did he learn who and what he was as a priest."

When I have often this or similar comments I have often wondered what it is the priest learned or discovered or came to realize that he did not know before.

Was there something omitted in seminary, either in academic or spiritual formation, that was finally revealed later on? Serious question.

"At what point does preaching or proselytizing become trickery?"

Preaching doesn't cross that line. If it is trickery (a la the prosperity preachers on TV) then it ceases to be preaching and becomes the rantings of a flim-flam artist.

Evangelization, too, ceases to be evangelization when it begins to involve trickery or, far worse, coercion. "Rice Christians" and "Taking the Soup" are sad, sad memories from those days, and we must not fall into that trap again.

Regarding TJM's health, Allan, good luck with that...

Fr. Kavanaugh,

"When I have often this or similar comments I have often wondered what it is the priest learned or discovered or came to realize that he did not know before."

May I suggest that you ask this of some of these TLM priests, and consider carefully what they have to say. Don't rely either upon blog comments by laymen like me, or on other priests lacking TLM experience.

"Was there something omitted in seminary, either in academic or spiritual formation, that was finally revealed later on?"

Every such priest with whom I've talked personally, has explicitly blamed his seminary for not giving him a deep understanding of the role of the liturgy and of his role as a priest. Leaving him with gaps that were filled only when he learned and celebrated the TLM. But, again, rely on adequately experienced fellow priests, not on blog bloviators.

TJM said...

Fr. McDonald,

It's your blog and you set the rules, but one thing that would be helpful is to not allow "certain" bloggers hide beyond Anonymnous when they are making snarky or ad hominem statements.

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

"Every such priest with whom I've talked personally, has explicitly blamed his seminary for not giving him a deep understanding of the role of the liturgy and of his role as a priest."

Well, my seminary didn't leave any gaps. Tip of the hat to Mt. St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Maryland, second oldest seminary in the USA after Fr. McDonald's school, St. Mary's, Baltimore.

Did I learn, or more clearly come to understand my role as a priest in the celebration of the sacraments in seminary? Yes.

Was I introduced to the theology of the Sacrifice of the Cross which is presented in an unbloody manner on the altar? Yes.

Were we instructed in the history of the liturgy, it's development over the centuries, and the unique role the priest plays in the celebration of the mass? Yes.

Etc.

So, if a priest who celebrates the EF wants to share here what it is he did NOT learn in seminary and how he came to fill in these gaps in celebrating the EF, I will be happy to read them.

I can only speak for myself, but the way I understand history, the Church has always allowed the liturgy to occur in a variety. Latin in the West and Greek in the East for example. It not the language English that is offensive, but the lack of reverence. Of course when the laity are being "shepherded" b6 the like of Fr. James "sexy priest" Martin, who can blame them?

TJM said...

Although a different place today, St.Mary's in Emmitsburg was NOT known for its orthodoxy in the 1970s and 1980s, so I would not tout my training there. From one recent news story:

"In general, the quality of spiritual formation in our seminaries is good and getting better. The atmosphere of experimentation and "do-it-yourself" liturgy that characterized the 1970s and 1980s has largely evaporated."

Fr. Allan J. McDonald said...

TJM, Mt. St. Mary in Emmitsburg WAS known for its orthodoxy (where Fr. K attended) back at that time. It was MY seminary, St. Mary's in Baltimore that was heterodox. Mt. St. Mary's in Emitsburg since Vat. II has always been a bastion of conservatism and orthodoxy.

TJM said...

Father that is interesting and thanks for the correction. It appears the news story I read had the names confused because clearly what I found said the opposite, but I DO believe you. I guess with the names so similar, that could happen. Reminds me of the time I read a news story in the Chicago Tribune years ago, telling its readers that Mussilini was a devout Catholic. Interesting that you went to a heterodox seminary and you turned out the way you did, notwithstanding all that. I suspect your parents were very traditional Catholics and you eventually came around to their way of thinking!!!

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

TJM - Get this through your skull. Maryland has TWO Catholic seminaries.

1) St. Mary's, 5400 Roland Ave, Baltimore, MD 21210

2) Mt. St. Mary's. 16300 Old Emmitsburg Rd, Emmitsburg, MD 21727

Fr. McDonald attended St. Mary's, Baltimore.

I attended Mt. St. Mary's, Emmitsburg.

TJM said...

Kavanaugh,

A bit touchy, are we? I acknowledged by error.

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

Not touchy at all.

I posted my comment long before your acknowledgement appeared.

And, you've been corrected on this same error before...

TJM said...

Kavanaugh,

LOL - you are touchy! "get this through your skull?"

Henry said...

Kavanaugh-TJM,

zzzzzzzzzzzz ... Give it a rest. Please.
