The music seems to have taken a nosedive in recent years. By the time of B XVI's last Easter Mass in the square, the setting was Mass I (Lux et Origo) which is associated with Eastertide, and the Responsorial Psalm was sung in Latin. By 2016 the Kyrie had unaccountably disappeared and only the response to the RP (Haec Dies) was in Latin. This year it was all in Italian.
Worse than this, we were back with Mass VIII (De Angelis), partly harmonized, which was the staple fare on all occasions in JP II's reign.
To give PF his due, he prayed the Roman Canon; Benedict in 2012 used EP III.
