The reason given is for ecological reasons and based upon concern for the environment. So they are going to bring scarves to Palm Sunday Mass and receive no actual palms.
Rita, in a truly silly way (she must not be surrounded by Palm Trees as I am in the Coastal Empire and Low Country) says that Senegal has plenty of palm trees, but they don't want to cut them down for the branches!
It is to laugh!!!!!!
Palm Trees need to be pruned of their branches and you don't cut the tree down to get palms! The branches grow back like Crepe Myrtles!
They could wave lizard tails as these grow back too!!!!!
When I was in the seminary in the 1970's I went to a Jesuit retreat house for Holy Thursday. Instead of the foot washing, we planted seeds in little paper cups, I think Dixie Cups, that had dirt in them and placed on the altar.
Now that's a great ecological idea. Maybe the seeds should be Palm Tree seeds!
Or maybe they should just give out artificial palm branches!

I suppose someone will try to admonish the naysayer by pointing out the tradition of pussy willows in the East - Willowy Sunday. When that tradition evolved, palms weren't accessible and, willows were symbolic of spring. That aside and regarding the scarves, how to make nothing into...nothing yet, the left embraces as a total something...another golden calf style novelty.
