Today marks the 40th day of the 40 days for Life campaign. The lives of many, many infants have been rescued from abortion by their efforts. The approach of this and other similar groups is to pray, educate, use means of persuasion, and provide alternatives to abortion, in order to change the hearts and minds of those who believe it is ok to terminate the life of an unborn child. There has been much progress made by the Pro-Life movement but much remains to be done and a big problem today is our judiciary. The blindfold on Lady Justice conveys impartiality in application of the law but in our own time it could allude to the blindness of the judiciary in recognizing and acknowledging that the determination as to when life begins and is therefore protected is not within the scope and competence of the courts in rendering an arbitrary legal decision, but is endowed by our Creator. It is rather appropriate that the 40th day of the 40 days for Life campaign occurs on Palm Sunday, the day when we celebrate the triumphal entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem. This event, of course, foretold the triumph of what His Passion and Death accomplished which was the victory over sin and death which opened up the gates of Eternal heaven for us. Likewise, with the 40 Days for Life campaign and other such efforts and prayers and sacrifices, we can look forward to another triumph of life over death, a day when the killing of the unborn will no longer be legally permitted.
