Syro-Malabar Church joins anti-Nipah campaign
In the wake of the Nipah outbreak, the Thamarassery diocese of the Syro-Malabar Church has issued a circular to the parish priests to serve the communion during the mass only on the hand.
The custom of serving the communion on the tongue by priests will be discouraged as part of the efforts to support the Health Department’s drive against the viral disease.

I still don't get the in the hand only policy as it concerns germs which is an everyday issue not just during an epidemic. I touch more hands when offering Holy Communion on the hand than I do tongues when offering on the tongue. And if the communicant is kneeling, it is less likely I will accidentally get saliva on my fingers from a tongue than when they are standing which increases those chances.
There on more germs on hands than on tongues, from what I am told, but more germs in common chalices where towards the end of using the common chalice, there is more saliva in the Precious Blood than there is Precious Blood--gross no? Hepatitis anyone especially if one has a sore in one's mouth as I do now because for some reason I keep biting my inside cheek and it is raw now!
Bishops and priests need to consult public health officials before giving instructions on matters where they lack sufficient expertise. FR. is right. Did they also suspend the peace sign? Otherwise the guide on communion distribution is even more meaningless.
In health care facilities there are signs posted with the words "wash your hands".
Health care workers know that hand contact is a primary vector in how infection
is spread. So with the chalice, for instance, it is people taking the chalice with their hands, and not that much touching the lips of the chalice with their mouth, that
is what is to be concerned about. And yes, people should be told that there should be no handshakes at the sign of peace(one can still nod or wave).
Now we will be subject to Anonymous’ left-wing lunacies on the subject. LOL
I wish they would suspend the peace sign.
"...germs which is an everyday issue..."
No, it's not an "issue."
Germs are with us every second of every day. Some live peacefully on our hands, ears, toes, and every other body part. Some inhabit the orifices of our bodies - ear canals, nasal passages and sinuses, and mouth. Some live happily in our guts - we need them there to survive.
The presence of germs is not an "issue."
Kavvy. "Germs" is casual use. Everyone understands the context in which Fr. is speaking. Quit seeking every opportunity to attack him.
I think it is simply because the preists that offer communion on the tongue may not be skilled at it. The only times I have had my tongue touched was in a NO parish. Or it could be a response to ill-informed (ignorant) people who do not know germs can be spread with the hand.
Gene, "casual" germs are not an "issue." He takes a non-issue and attempts to turn it into an epidemic. The context matters not.
Hope you and your biome, germs included, sleep well.
Let me see, during our recent flu epidemic in Savannah, which priest banned the common chalice from his liturgies and which one did not?
Me thinks he protests too much.
I suspended the use of the cup till the threat of flu transmissions had passed. That was a reasonable thing to do. When the threat was gone, we resumed use of the common cup.
To post warnings about "germs" when there is no particular threat is another example of your own hysteria about "germs."
If you really worried about the dangers of "germs" and you didn't suspect use of the cup during the "recent flu epidemic in Savannah," then your continued musings about the danger of "germs" doesn't make much sense.
Gene,
You are not dealing with a rational person, but a dyed in the wool lefty for whom the "
agenda" is everything.
Well, the "agenda" here is basic science (epidemiology), so, in terms of having an "agenda" I am guilty as charged.
Kavanaugh,
LOL - “science” is whatever the left says it is to suit its agenda. We had global cooling 40 years ago followed by global warming - which no surprise is not about science but higher taxes and more government control. No one has ever explained how higher taxes or more government control addresses the issue of “saving the planet.” Since the Church teaches we receive the fullness of the Eucharist with the host why take a chance with imbibing from a common cup? This innovation did nothing to enhance belief in the Real Presence, which studies suggest a falling off in belief after this protestant style practice became widespread. And spare us your canned response, it doesn’t work with the sentient
No, your conception of science is wrong. I would explain why, but it would make no difference to one who wants to remain ignorant.
Just consider that the next time you take a pill, gas up you car, use your computer, use a plastic cup, watch television, get an X-ray, or do any of another thousand things, you are relying on and benefitting from SCIENCE.
Kavanaugh,
Some more bad news on the global warming fraud:

For a committed lefty like you, it's "Government Over All!
Your mind is closed like a trap so it's comical how you engage in projection.
So am I to understand that you think that when you take a pill, gas up you car, use your computer, use a plastic cup, watch television, get an X-ray, or do any of another thousand things you are NOT relying on and benefitting from SCIENCE?
