JUNE 7, 1980, 40 YEARS AGO!

My first Mass the next day back then would have been Corpus Christi.  It was a hot, hot, hot day in Savannah, 98! And it was humid, humid, humid. The cathedral was packed and hot and humid too despite air conditioning.

So young and so full of commitment! And Fr. John Lyons by your side. The Diocese grew stronger that day!! God bless you both.

A shame you're not rockin' the stache anymore.

Father, as someone who was at that time doing level best to party myself out of graduate school, I commend your stick-to-it-iveness....

and double the kudos for then considering the true history and teachings of the Church being treated with disdain by all the latest-greatest know-it-alls, and recovering much of that lost knowledge to the edification and hopeful salvation of your flocks.

Hell may or may not be crowded, but those surely there will be those who have squandered their gifts leading others astray in worship of a don't worry/be happy cosmic smiley face, and ignoring clear teachings of God regarding love and service owned to him and him alone.

TJM, hippies had long hair and infrequently bathed. Father's style of the time we called "helmet head". It was for cleaner cut folk who bathed and who had aspirations to greater things.

I've never seen a priest with a moustache. I don't think there was a hard-and-fast rule against it, but it was seen as an 'adornment' with military connotations and therefore inappropriate.

To a Brit, a USN officer with a moustache looks odd. In the RN it's either a 'full set' or nothing.

FRMJK, yes Kiel as I was a deacon at Peter Claver and my parents vested me. That miter, of course, by the time I got to the cathedral in 1985 has a bit of a sweat stain.

Stored in one of the drawers in the cathedral sacristy, it was cleaned, but the stain is just visible!

Bob,

I was teasing. I actually had a similar haircut in those days and it was considered conservative at that time!

Father, congratulations on 40 years of faithful service to Our Lord and his children. You are one of my favorite priests in the Savannah archdiocese. When are you doing the TLM next?

By the way the cathedral looks so different. Was that first photo the cathedral? I hope not.

TJM, my phone age detector is on the fritz so apologies...the hair was to have long hair but it not be long hair, rather a pageboy sorta look, there was a lot of middle ages/renaissance to much of the fashion then with high collars, quilting, buckled shoes in that late 60s/earliest 80s era.

Father, I happened to have stumbled into a Mass at St Joseph while visiting town, which I believe was perhaps your 30th Anniversary, it was the one where a goodly number of your parishoners were chortling before Mass out front over having smuggled in your blessed mother as a suprise. Apologies if I have this wrong. We Catholics get around, you know, and meet a lot of folk, including at Benedictine Military and Holy Spirit.

Why did the bishop and the newly ordained wear different colored vestments that day?

Father, meant to finish up the last missive by saying that I was one of the many who thanked you 10yrs ago for your service and sacrifice, and I thank you, today.

Michael, thanks. I pray you and your family are doing well through this COVID-19 pandemic. Seems like everyone in New York and New Jersey are okay, thank God.

I had garbled yesterday's post. I had wished to say, "peace and eternal rest to Father McDonald's parents." Thank you, Father, for the photographs that you've shared with us.

Pax.
