Who is St. Junipero Serra and why are California protesters toppling his statues?
Serra in 2015 was canonized as a saint by Pope Francis during a trip to the U.S.
"Serra is not the historical hero people thought when this landmark statue to him was erected, one of many throughout California, as a historical emblem, he is toxic and should be removed,” the petition reads.

Let Anonymous K explain since its the Dem Party’s stormtroopers who are doing this
I don't see an "anti-Catholic" strain in this. I do see an antinomianism that is the flower of the Radical Individualism that has become part and parcel of contemporary American culture.
This cultural desecration is caused by anything but individualism, but rather the Left's Orwellian erasure of history and evaluation of the past through the single criterion of their toxic identity politics. Far from viewing people as individuals, the violent Left divides people in good victim classes and evil oppressor classes based on the color of their skin, sex or sexual orientation (i.e., things that individuals can't do anything about, so it is unjust to blame them for them). Thus anything positive Father Serra may have done (like bringing the light of Christ to pagans) is subsumed to the identitarian narrative that he is an evil, white "oppressor" of the native Americans. Also, the violent left-wing Antifa/BLM fascists (most of whom are pasty white) hate Western Civilization and Christianity. Moreover, they don't believe in the democratic process, since they don't go through any proper legal procedures to try to remove historical statues.
Radical Individualism underlies these and other acts of violence and cultural desecration.
It can be as simple as "I don't put my shopping cart in the parking lot corral." That's the individual saying "I don't have to concern myself with anything but my comfort."
It can be as complex as "I'm going to tear down this statue." That's the individual saying
"I don't have to concern myself with anything other than my feelings." (It doesn't matter that those "feelings" may be based on an ignorance of history, an anti-Catholic bias, a manic desire to destroy, etc.)
The most "toxic identity" is "I am everything. I am the center of the world."
Black Lives Matter and Antifa are not the cultural heroes that people seem to think, when so many cowardly civic leaders and bishops bowed before them and acquiesced to their radical demands. As a social force they are toxic and should be removed.
Black Lives Matter is the black KKK. Period.
Antifa is a terrorist group. Period.
In Australia, Roz Ward is a prominent academic, and a Queer and Marxist activist; she was also the founder of the Safe Schools program for many Australian schools.
The following is how Ms Ward ended an article for Socialist Alliance in Redflag.org.au on Cardinal George Pell and the Catholic Church in Australia:
"Reportedly there is a marble and terrazzo mausoleum prepared for Pell in the crypt of St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. I hope very soon he rots in that crypt and that the edifice of the church comes crashing down around his stinking corpse."
There is a lot of anti-Catholicism in the moves against Junipero Serra. I grew up a few minutes drive from Mission San Jose in California. The Alhonee (sp) Indians have always hated him and claimed that he forced them to convert to Catholicism. I grew up with it and their hatred for the Church was real.
"When victim hood is considered currency, there is bound to be counterfeits."

Here is what is toxic in US Society today:
1) Infanticide masquerading as an "essential healthcare service."
2) Gay marriage
3) Transgenderism
4) Sanctuary Cities
5) BLM and Antifa
6) Democrat operatives masquerading as Catholic bishops and priests
7) Universities suppressing free speech and acting as lynch mobs
8) Media lying and covering for the vicious political left
I could go on but you get the general idea
I believe Father Kavanaugh brings a valid point, but also Carol H. It may well be a mixture of the 2 motives.
