AMEN BROTHER, I MEAN FATHER!

At Crux Father Jeffrey Kirby has a very good commentary. I think most Catholic laity and clergy would agree with his suggestions. Most of us know what clericalism is and it is epitomized by Pope Francis’ stonewalling as well as those of his supporters, his cohorts like Cupich. However, their stonewalling is the clericalism at the root of the rot—root rot and placing oneself on a pedestal above reproach.

Press title for full article. Below it are the three common sense requirements:

Voicing ‘immense hope’ that Francis will act swiftly and honestly on abuse

1) The pope needs to address the charges leveled against him by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano and the questions surrounding portions of his episcopal ministry in Argentina. If he made mistakes, he needs to repent. If he put his trust in the wrong people or for the wrong reasons, then he needs to address them and take accountability.

Dismissing these and thinking he can make veiled comments in liturgical homilies and that they will go away, only indicates that he does not realize how much this omission hurts his moral authority and the trust that people of goodwill wish to place in him.

Right or wrong, the pope needs to clear the air and regain a higher level of trust in himself and in his authority to shepherd and reform the Church.

2) The ecclesial life and series of promotions of Theodore McCarrick need to be fully investigated. We are beyond a mere laicization. Now, the names of enablers and protectors need to be given. Other clerics need to be disciplined.

If this doesn’t happen, then trust in the internal governance of the Church will be lost. The hierarchy will appear to be a stained boys’ club which looks out and protects its own, even when they abuse and hurt others. The enablers and protectors of McCarrick need to be removed and disgraced for their shameful compliance with evil. It must be clear to all that there are consequences for cooperating with evil.

3) The obvious question of gay priests needs to be taken seriously. Attempts to place this abuse and cover-up solely within an arena of clericalism is only a raw and unthinking display of the very clericalism that is supposedly being exposed and denounced.

Beyond these empty efforts, the pope needs to legitimately address whether men with homosexual tendencies should be in the Catholic priesthood. Supposedly that is already our discipline, and yet it doesn’t seem to be enforced or taken very seriously.

These are only three of the many issues in the hearts and minds of the faithful.

As the international gathering approaches near the feast of the Chair of Saint Peter, it’s the immense hope that the pope will act swiftly and honestly and that the harm done to victims, to the faith and to the Church will be taken seriously and that a concrete path of repentance and wide-scale reform will be spelled out and justly followed by all.

Fr Kirby is a nice man to have hope. I think we are beyond that being helpful, however, and is making the burden on these men even more great than they can already bear. The good news is that if this boulder continues down this mountain the college of cardinals will be stacked against a repeat of the last enclave.

Isn't it ironic that prior to Francis, Catholics could claim that having a pope helped to PREVENT division and confusion.....

This public service announcement brought to you by;

"The Committee for Kasper for Pope."

Bee here:

I think all of these hopes are just pipe dreams. Pope Francis and the current cardinals and bishops are not in "repentance and conversion" mode...they are in damage control mode. In my view, their main concern is how to quell the outrage and uproar without actually changing anything or anyone, with minimal upheaval to the status quo, so things can get back to "normal" as soon as possible.

The people who created the problem and their minions are not going to be the ones who fix it, because they LIKE it this way. To call on Pope Francis to "act swiftly and honestly on abuse" and homosexual priests would mean he'd have to remove a large number of clerics, including current bishops and cardinals. Yeah. Right. Like he would do that, or they would let that happen. As if they're going to give up their cushy life and power because some sniveling lay people and lowly priests are scandalized. Get real. Look at McCarrick and his allies...did even one of them come clean about him? Did he come clean about what he actually did? Not a chance. Look at Farrell...he denies knowing anything about McCarrick's behavior. It's laughable.

Expecting Pope Francis to clean house of those who put him in office (!) would be like expecting someone to clean out Washington, D.C. of all the lifelong rats (both parties and all government agencies) that have made their home there, and who scurry through the halls doing their dastardly deeds. Not going to happen.

God bless.

"The pope needs to address the charges leveled against him by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano and the questions surrounding portions of his episcopal ministry in Argentina."

Who determined that? Who determined that the Vicar of Christ should kneel and bow to Archbishop Viganò's claims in question?

The Church of Rome leveled charges against Archbishop Viganò. Why doesn't Archbishop Viganò respond in obedient fashion to the God-given authority that Rome holds over him?

MT it is the sensuum fidelium in the best sense of it and a way for His Holiness to break the bonds of clericalism and authoritarianism that firmly grasps this pope notwithstanding His Holiness ‘s protestations to the contrary or words that deflect the truth. It would be a breath of fresh air for the Supreme Pontiff to actually be humble and submit to accountability.

"The pope needs to address the charges leveled against him by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano..."

Oh, okay.

Archbishop Viganò insisted that Pope Francis' should resign as Pope. Should Pope Francis have bowed to Archbishop Viganò's demand in question?

I mean...if Pope Francis is required to kneel and bow to Archbishop Viganò's, then the Vicar of Christ is compelled to obey Archbishop Viganò's demand in question.

Right?

Father McDonald, why should Pope Francis respond to one "charge" after another issued by Archbishop Viganò when we know that one "charge" after another had been discredited...and one "charge" after another reflects simply Archbishop Viganò's opinion?

We know, for example, that Archbishop Viganò concocted stories about "canonical sanctions" that Pope Benedict XVI had placed supposedly upon then-Cardinal McCarrick.

Archbishop Viganò defamed Pope Francis with the falsehoods question. He spurred hatred of Pope Francis among folks who believed Archbishop Viganò's false claims about "canonical sanctions."

We are supposed to take seriously the nonsense that has flowed from Archbishop Viganò.

Oh, well...should others accept his tales in question, then so be it.

Okay.

Pax.

MT,

It would also be a breath of fresh air for you to admit that PF has done nothing to the clerical miscreants at the Vatican who were involved in a cocaine fueled gay sex orgy!

MT,

Where are you? Why won't you answer my reasonable question?

I add my voice to those with little or no hope of the pope cleaning house.

If we really want change, we're going to have to do like in the olden' days of physical removal of bishops from their thrones. They are not going to do this.

Nothing will come of this "summit"...

Mark Thomas, it would be nice for Francis to try to clarify things brought to him like popes are supposed to do... remember the Dubia? And it would be nice to see a Francis kneel on those unused kneeled we keep seeing...

Father Dan,

As I have pointed out to others, MT runs away when you ask that he think and defend his position with something other than a trail of non sequiturs
