I think he protests too much and, well, he certainly is chatty about himself.
Another interview given to Crux to protest he is a Catholic, here is a portion of it:
ROME – Pope Francis’s new top theological advisor has attempted to reassure voices in the United States and elsewhere who’ve questioned his adherence to Catholic teaching and tradition, vowing that he’s not a “Soros spy infiltrated in the Church.”
“I am not a Freemason, nor an ally of the New World Order, nor a Soros spy infiltrated in the Church. Those are pure fantasies,” said Archbishop Víctor Manuel Fernández, an Argentine theologian tapped by the pontiff July 1 as the new prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, traditionally the Vatican’s doctrinal watchdog agency.
“I try to be an honest person, I confess often, I love the Church and its doctrine, most of my writings are about spirituality and prayer. I cannot conceive my life without God,” Fernández said.
“So [they may] have confidence, and it is better [for them] to look for enemies of the faith elsewhere,” said Fernández, who will turn 61 on July 18, in reference to his critics.

If the next pope defies expectations and turns out to be orthodox, we may not have a 'cadaver synod' but there will be an almighty clear-out, and (Deo volente) a new Syllabus Errorum.
He also told a Spanish interviewer that blessing of same sex unions is a possibility - as long as they are clearly distinguishable from real marriages. Setting the subjective bar so low, it is nearly invisible. He has not even been installed yet and is going full lavender mafia. Not surprising as has a checkered past in that regard. Francis is getting desperate as his time grows short - his vision for the Church (quite similar to modern mainline Protestantism) is not yet in place. Perhaps his desperation will be so reckless as to stir his brother bishops to action (hope never quits - even when it seems silly)
Senior Church officials speak in nebulous terms and avoid making direct statements. This certainly meets that model. The conclusion I have is that for him, everything is permissible if you think about long enough. Similarly, if people disagree with you, then you parse them on an acidulous spectrum to isolate them not only from his supporters, but from each other. It’s interesting to contemplate why he doesn’t do that for theological or doctrinal conflicts. However, his statement concerning his laissez-faire attitude toward investigation of sex abuse is going to be immediate and growing trouble for him. Applying the same attitude toward sex abuse and the pursuit of its destruction as he has towards the defense of the Faith will catch itself on the hooks of secular reality and criminal justice. But it is consistent with the obsessive rationalisation of sexual deviancy that infiltrates the Church. He will need to recognise that and deal with it more proactively than he indicates in this interview of face a hurricane.
The obsession with blessing same sex or whatever the LGBTQ+++++ terms are now, is a mask to begin a process of acceptance of any kind of sex perform by any kind of person, or however one identifies oneself, as being normal and non-sinful.
Alleviating peoples' or whatever they call themselves, guilt is the goal. It is therapeutic Catholicism which Pope Francis seems to prefer over doctrine.
It will also change the Church's anthropology about all of the Sacraments and render null and void Christ as High Priest and Bridegroom and the Church as Bride.
And how do you bless the sex a couple is having without it looking like a wedding? Are we to bless adulterers who are still legally and canonically married in order to alleviate their guilt and make them feel as though the institutional Church really loves them just as they are--no need to repent or change?
It's all really rather puzzling. Why?

Two days ago, Ed Condon, via The Pillar, reported the following important fact:

Those who despise him, launched immediate, vicious attacks/lies against Archbishop Fernández (as well as our Holy Father). Following years of having encountered such garbage, Archbishop Fernández determined that it was time to respond to his detractors.
But in certain ways, Archbishop Fernández could not win.
That is, had he not responded to the recent attacks against him, his detractors would claim that they had told the truth...that is why Archbishop Fernández had remained silent.
Conversely, his response to said defamatory attacks would "prove" that Archbishop Fernández is thin-skinned, defensive, and chatty.
The good news is that it is clear (at least to me) that Archbishop Fernández is a holy, humble man.
Anyway, Archbishop Fernández has responded to his, as well as Pope Francis', detractors.
Some folks will cheer that...others will jeer that.
