GIVEN THE FRANCISCAN RIGIDITY , MICROMANAGEMENT AND AUTHORITARIANISM IN CHARLOTTE, DOES THIS SEND A MESSAGE?

Copied from Rorate Caeli. Press title for full article there:

Pope Leo XIV Extends Apostolic Blessing to SSPX Chapel in North Carolina for Its 25th Anniversary

In a remarkable gesture of pastoral solicitude, Pope Leo XIV has extended an Apostolic Blessing to the Society of St. Pius X's chapel in the Charlotte Diocese of North Carolina:

The document reads:

The Holy Father Leo XIV cordially imparts the requested Apostolic Blessing to Reverend Father John Bourbeau, FSSPX and Faithful of the Fraternitas Sacerdotalis Sancti Pii X of Saint Anthony of Padua Chapel on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Chapel invoking through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary an abundance of divine graces. Mount Holly, North Carolina, 22nd August 2025, Jubilaeum A.D. MMXXV. (Dated at the Vatican, November 18, 2025, and signed by Card. Konrad Krajewski, Papal Almoner)

Apart from this bombshell, Damian Thompson has some wise, sober words:

… Leo doesn’t seem to want to repudiate anyone and certainly not Francis. He clearly endorses some of Francis’s ideas, especially certain political themes. He’s also clearly opposed to the idea that any pope should rubbish the initiatives of his predecessor – and this conviction of his leads me to suspect that, if he had succeeded Benedict, there would have been no Traditionis Custodes. What remains to be seen is how far Leo will go in ‘softening the impact’ of this and other badly conceived Bergoglian ‘reforms’. We’ve already seen some changes to Vatican financial arrangements and to the structure of the Diocese of Rome that look more like a change of direction than mere softening. These are confusing times, but I think we need to stop using Francis’s pontificate (or Benedict’s) as the measure of Leo’s. His spirituality is subtle, attractive and may yet surprise us by its distinctiveness.

Damian Thompson said..."I think we need to stop using Francis’s pontificate (or Benedict’s) as the measure of Leo’s."

From the dawn of his Pontificate to date, Pope Leo XIV has referenced/promoted Pope Francis (requiescat in pace) repeatedly.

Pope Leo XIV declared his allegiance to Pope Francis' interpretation/implementation of Vatican II...has thrown in with Synodality, the China policy...with Pope Francis' Encyclicals...Fiducia Supplicans...Pope Francis' willingness to engage journalists, etc.

Pope Leo XIV has fueled the popular notion that he, in one way after another, is Pope Francis 2.0

MT except where His Holiness isn’t Leo is his own pope! THSNKS BE TO GOD. Francis is history…,

Yet again, MT ignores any and all evidence to the contrary of his conjured hypothesis. Maybe Leo has fueled a fever dream that he is simply Francis 2.0, but it is increasingly apparent to those with eyes to see that he is not. I also defy the slothery statement of this being a “popular notion”—maybe among journos and those with a vested interest in such.

Father McDonald said..."Francis is history."

Father, I am thankful for Pope Leo XIV's view of Pope Francis (requiescat in pace). Pope Leo XIV, May 10, 2025 A.D:

"During Mass, I strongly felt the spiritual presence of Pope Francis accompanying us from heaven."

=======

In line with the above, I view Pope Francis as praying for the souls in Purgatory, for peace on earth...praying that each member of Church Militant, in unwavering communion with Pope Leo XIV, grows closer to God and His True Church.

Pax.

Pope Francis is no longer the pope. He’s dead as is Pope Benedict XVI. Poe Leo is not Francis or Benedict. He’s his own pope. I agree with Damian Thompson. We only have one pope and Leo is in a sober
way correcting Francis’ papacy. Thanks be to God and the Holy Spirit!

Pope Leo XIV is Pope. He is in communion with his predecessors.

I appreciate Pope Leo XIV's wise continuation of one initiative after another that Pope Francis (requiescat in pace), guided by the Holy Ghost, had advanced.

Examples: Pope Leo XIV has expressed unwavering support in regard to Pope Francis' interpretation/implementation of Vatican II, as well as Synodality.

Holy and great Pope Benedict XVI taught us to grant "unconditional reverence and obedience" to the Roman Pontiff.

May we apply Pope Benedict XVI's holy example in question to our relationship with Pope Leo XIV.

"Pope Leo's continuation of one initiative after another" . . . except for all the ones he's ended or contradicted.

It really is getting funny, MT.

What isn't funny is your blatant misrepresentation of Pope Benedict XVI, who did not "t[each] us to grant 'unconditional reverence and obedience' to the Roman Pontiff."
